You are describing a very narrow definition of cinematic. That's not what I meant. If you saw it you'd understand that that cinematic sweeping blah blah you mention wouldn't ft in this film at all.
It's one guy stuck in a small base trying to survive. It hardly needs swooping overhead cameras or john Willams scoring it. Neither would work at all in this film.
Which would be obvious if you watched it.

For anyone who has actually seen it, do you reckon Matt Damon still eats potatoes?

Re: Movie: The Martian (Ridley Scott; Matt Damon)
To be fair, I saw it in 3-D. Because that was the only option available to me at the time I was able to see the movie. Maybe that has something to do with it? I don't know. I guess, I'd recommend seeing it in 3-D because the visuals were really gorgeous. *shrugs*LoathedVermin72 wrote:I haven't seen The Martian yet, but I was a bit perplexed when I saw the trailers by the very thing VG is saying: it looked very flat and uninteresting visually. Exactly. The Martian looks made for tv. The frames, the scope...even the fuckin score, my god...its for tv. Its a pretty huge production for an HBO or Netflix movie.LoathedVermin72 wrote:I haven't seen The Martian yet, but I was a bit perplexed when I saw the trailers by the very thing VG is saying: it looked very flat and uninteresting visually. Yeah, this is far from a perfect movie. But it is fun and I enjoyed watching it. There are a lot of issues I could take with it but the visuals, the look of the film, this "made for tv" thing is not one of them. Genuinely doesn't make sense to me. *shrugs*tragabigzanda wrote:Really not getting this made-for-tv complaint. Sure, it's not as grand in scale as some of Ridley's other flicks; and yea, those digital "Damon talks to the camera" scenes are intentionally low-budget looking. But no way would I say the scenes on Mars look "flat." There is a sort of clinical look to it, I guess, but I think that's keeping with the practical nature of the story.
I won't pretend the Earth scenes looked even vaguely interesting, but again, not what I would call "made-for-tv."

Thats just one of many issues i had with it. But is a very important one, not only because of the subject of the movie, but because its Scott directing.
But the script was bad, the acting, the music...i hated it....donald glover, kristen wiig, jeff daniels, sean bean...who directed those guys?

Wiig was oddly out of her depth. Glover was fine. I didn't have an issue with either of them really, but Wiig definitely looked a bit lost. Probably because her characters was fairly unnecessary. The script didn't give her much to do and I'm guessing Scott didn't feel any need to go above and beyond directing her.tragabigzanda wrote:Glover and Wiig were the low points for me. She's far beyond one note in Welcome to Me. Same with Skeleton Twins (and I know most people hated that and her in it). She has a lot more range than directors typically giver her credit for.tragabigzanda wrote:Kristen Wiig is a one-note actor. Glover is always just so cute and hamboney, it always strikes me as trying too hard. I never like him.
Glover felt perfect for what the role asked in The Martian. And the only other thing I've seen him was GIRLS and he did a decent job in that. I have no beef with him.

Sure, I can see that. And yeah Hader was definitely better; far exceeded my expectations.

Hader is amazing, Wiig is great in Bridesmaids but her best movie was Macgruber
