By this logic, he wouldn't even need to get close. Just force-throw his saber into the weak spot.

The comic panels I posted a page or so back which are cannon had Vader telling Jabba that the Sith do not use mind control they use force. Now is Vader being a bad ass or is that true? Can Vader use the force to deflect Smaug fire? Does he carry one of the force shields those droids have? Would the tech in his mask find the missing scale in Smaugs belly? There are a lot of unknowns.

- Vader can use mind control, but prefers not to. Those comic panels don't say anything about "can't." Just "don't."
- Yes. If people can deflect laser blasts then I'm sure he can deflect fire.
- He's smart enough to bring a shield, but Stip won't let him have one in the made up rules that he keeps changing in an effort to give Smaug every advantage possible.
- Vader don't need tech. He's got the Force. Like Pete said, if Luke can do it with the Death Star, Vader can do it here. I don't know about Vader's tech. That's a good question.

Okay, that's a fair point. And if the Force could sense that kinda thing without prior knowledge, surely Vader and The Emperor would have "felt" it and plugged up that fucking hole.
