He re-recorded Misery Chain, which I thought was odd. The one that appeared on 12 Years A Slave soundtrack is amazing.
This was going to be my first question, is it better than Carry On...glad to hear at least one person thinks it tops that turd. I haven't listened yet but expectations are rather low after all the mediocre reviews I've read....

"As time has moved on, I have less range and less ability to easily go in and out of different registers, but I feel like I have a much better ability to emotionally connect with any song."

Just finished my second listen and I think It gets better. But nothing really sticks out to me. Yes they are good songs but nothing really screams "yeah this mother fucker is awesome." Its all "that was alright."

This songwriting on this new album is incredible. I mean it feels so personal - in the best, warmest, suprising, funny, powerful ways. It feels like a breakthrough for you. - Cameron Crowe

Whoever said it was spot on, an incredibly average album. There's honestly no real stand out except for maybe Dead Wishes. A few are growers (Through The Window, Wrong Side). Some real turds, too, like Josephine, Let Your Eyes Wander, and Circling.

His voice is stellar, though, prob the best I've heard him on record since the first AS album. If his voice is this strong heading into the next SG album, that's at least one thing to be excited for. Better than Scream and Carry On, but that's not saying much, and like the latter I'll probably forget about this one after a few months.

Why not just an acoustic guitar and his voice. I am seeing him in two weeks. I bet most of these songs are much better songbook-style. This whole album feels like Sleeping By Myself. Ugh!

There is a chance that this album may grow on me but I can't see it. It's so safe and average.

I'd like to have heard this produced by T Bone Burnett or Buddy Miller or even Steve Earle. Shit, even Rick Rubin.

And I'm seeing him in December. I hope you have good things to say, dt.
