So, yeah, there are some things that are good, a couple levels that work. I'll keep watching.

I dont love any of that. The ONLY thing i love is Ato Essandoh. The whole should be his.
Yeah his stuff is great.
He was my favorite part of the pilot. Is his story being treated as a focus, or a side-plot?
side plot tied to the main story
 Boo, hiss.
I'm still only on the second episode. And I do wish he was a bigger part of it already. But it makes sense since it's really Bobby Cannavale's story.

Also, is it just me, or is Ray Romano, like, surprisingly good in this?

Sober Richie on top of his game and making shit happen is ultimately more interesting than spiraling out of control.

indeed, but even sober richie is a boring cliche of a character. while he's busy trying to stay clean, his underlings are doing cool stuff like discovering punk and disco. that's what the show should be.

I also think the show would benefit greatly from not trying so hard to take place in the real world. Having them open for the New York Dolls, fine. David Bowie and Robert Plant impersonators? Name dropping Freddy Mercury? It gets to feel very forced. Especially since they don't even get the rights to so many of the songs/bands they reference.

you're not wrong, but i like that they're bold enough to have actual rock stars in the show rather than just characters loosely based on actual rock stars. it's refreshing in a way.

Haha, I feel relief too. The last part of the season had gotten just interesting enough that I probably would've forced myself to watch season 2. True Detective all over again.
