Huge KS fan. First time I heard that I thought I was going to have a heart attack I laughed so hard. Just a hilarious story. I would have loved to have been a fly on the wall with those two.

If I were making a mixtape for someone who knew nothing about Prince, a lot of the hits would be on it. He’s one of the few artists who has genuinely great hit songs, tunes that are not only catchy, but boldly artistic. (The bass-free “When Doves Cry” still sounds radical.) A lot of times with big bands, their hits aren’t their “best” material. With Prince, a lot of his hit are top shelf.

Have you ever head the "small club Paris, France" bootleg? There's a version of "Still Would Stand All Time" on there that kills. It's the one where he yells at the backup singers mid-song. "Who's the fool singing 'will' it's 'would!'"

Yes! One of the best bootlegs of anyone, ever. The guitar solo he plays during Just My Imagination is one of the greatest things I've ever heard. Sadly, my copy was on cassette and I've never gotten around to getting a digital copy of it. I've posted that version of Just My Imagination on this board a few times. I forget who it is, but there's someone on here who would repeatedly refute the claim that Prince was one of the all-time great guitarists and claimed that no one could ever produce a great solo by him outside of the RRHOF one. I posted 3 or 4 solos that blow the RRHOF one out of the water, but they all went ignored.

Good list. I used to make mixtapes of just Prince ballads. The Beautiful One is probably the top in that category, but he really deserves credit for his ballads/love songs. "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" is just an insanely great melody, as memorable as anything the Beatles ever wrote. "Free," "Condition of the Heart" "Adore," "Forever in My Life," "Slow Love," "When Two Are In Love," "Scandalous," "The Arms of Orion," "Sometimes it Snows in April," "Diamonds and Pearls." And so on. Love Anna Stesia, too. If this dude only wrote ballads he'd be one of the greatest ever.

I've heard it (and can hear the chorus in my head), but I'd have to give it another spin. (My YouTube complaint again.) It's on my external drive and ain't no way I'm waking my 16-month old with some old Prince tunes. Will dig it out tomorrow and give it another listen. I'm pretty sure I have that small club bootleg on mp3. Will hook ya up if I do. (Prince's lawyers will now be shutting down the RM.)

I think the only Prince bootlegs that made it on to my hard drive are The Undertaker and a Lovesexy show (one of the famous ones, Werchter maybe?). I'll upload those if you don't have them.

I had forgotten about Rock 'N' Roll is Alive (And it Lives in Minneapolis). She's right, that is a good song. I have it on cassette sitting somewhere in my parents' garage with the rest of my music collection.

"30 Years of Unreleased Funk" is worthwhile, although it would be nice to finally get some of this stuff in high quality audio. I don't think anything like that exists. Most of these boots are all from what sound to be multi-generation cassette sources. Still, lots of good unreleased material in here.

Almost all of my Prince bootlegs were on cassette. I know I had a bunch of the stuff from those bootlegs you posted, but I definitely didn't have those specific boots. I remember being excited about getting Rebirth of the Flesh cause it meant I could make my own "Camille" record.

I was worried the extended/original Computer Blue wouldn't live up to my memories of it from like a decade ago.

But it's just as devastatingly awesome as I remember. Ugh, that they had to edit this down to fit it on the album is a travesty.



Side note: This is definitely the strongest link between 1999 and Purple Rain.

There must be video footage of it somewhere, since the released (edited) track (like most of Purple Rain) was taken from actual live performances at First Avenue. I've seen some of the videos floating around, but I don't have 'em.

Before he had everything taken off of YouTube, I believe the complete 1983 First Avenue show was up there for a while.

Hmm, according to Wiki only three songs from the soundtrack came from that show, so I guess Computer Blue was a studio recording.

"I Would Die 4 U", "Baby I'm a Star" and "Purple Rain" were recorded live from a show on August 3, 1983, at the First Avenue club in Minneapolis, with overdubs and edits added later.

With any luck, this new book will shed some light on it. Definitely want to check this out.
