Continuing on:

Hard Promises

1) The Waiting- A classic. A
2) A Woman In Love (It's Not Me)- I had forgotten about this song. Cool little keyboard riff to open up then a great, hard-driving tune. A
3) Nightwatchman- Don't really like this one. The riff sounds like some slowed-down discarded Van Halen riff. C-
4) Something Big- cool drop-D tuning. A mood not unlike Gold Dust Woman. I like it. B
5) King's Road- upbeat little number. Nothing special here. C
6) Letting You Go- Opens up like some 70's Don Williams song. Nope. D
7) A Thing About You- again, nothing special here. C
8) Insider- The forgotten Stevie Nicks duet. I can see why she wanted Stop Draggin' My Heart Around on her album. It's much better and a better utilization of their voices together. This isn't bad, it's just not great. B
9) The Criminal Kind- great loose slide riff. The tune itself reminds me of Dylan. I like it. B+
10) You Can Still Change Your Mind- odd synth tag at the front, especially for the soft tune that follows. It's ok. B

Overall, I didn't enjoy it as much as Damn The Torpedos. Sorry, surfndestroy.

Long After Dark

1) A One Story Town- high energy opener. Average tune. I do enjoy the chorus. B-
2) You Got Lucky- Another classic. Love the narrative in this one. A
3) Deliver Me- Interesting riff. I dig it. B+
4) Change Of Heart- Another good riff. B
5) Finding Out- totally dig it. A
6) We Stand A Chance- Ooooh. Dig this one, too. I like using the wah-wah as a filter. B+
7) Straight Into Darkness- LOVE this song. It seemed familiar when it came up in the playlist, but I didn't recognize it. Great tune. A+
8) The Same Old You- TP&TH do late 70s Stones. I like it tho. B
9) Between Two Worlds- another piano driven riff. Benmont getting some love on this album. B+
10) A Wasted Life- what the fuck is this? This is terrible. Caribbean Petty? Yuck. F

Overall, if you take that last track off, this was a much more enjoyable album than the previous.

Southern Accents

1) Rebels- eh. Mediocre. Don't really care for it. C-
2) It Ain't Nothin' To Me- Hmm. Petty does an early 80s dance number? I don't know. I do like the recurring title line. C
3) Don't Come Around Here No More- I used to really not care for this one. It has aged well for me. B+
4) Southern Accents- I would like this better without the strings. Maybe just him and acoustic guitar or piano.- C
5) Make It Better (Forget About Me)- I thought I had mistakenly put an Alabama track on here by mistake. D
6) Spike- Swampy. Low-down. Totally dig it. A
7) Dogs On The Run- Average Petty song. Not great, not terrible. C
8) Mary's New Car- forgettable. D
9) The Best Of Everything- like someone hired him to write a bad prom theme song. D+

Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)

1) Jammin' Me- I've dug this one since the 80s. Great riff, too. A
2) Runaway Trains- very interesting and 80s pop influenced intro. The rest of the track maintains it. C+
3) The Damage You've Done- Like the fade-in. I like this one. B
4) It'll All Work Out- Starts out feeling like a cross between and Italian/ Oriental mix up of mandolin playing. Then the band comes in and it feels Celtic. C
5) My Life-Your World- another fade-in. Cool bluesy playing, acoustic slide playing all right! Boy, that changed. I like the bass figure. Interesting tune. B-
6) Think About Me- certainly CCR influenced this one. It's ok. C+
7) All Mixed Up- some odd chant to intro. Then a track that has nothing to do with the chant. Confusing. They should've stayed with the chant. D
8) Ain't Love Strange- reminds me of I'm No Angel by Gregg Allman. Nothing special. C
9) How Many More Days- eh, C-
10) Let Me Up (I've Had Enough)- nice blues-based riff. Nothing outstanding. I do dig the chorus, tho. B-

Full Moon Fever

1) Free Fallin'- I know it's pretty much his signature tune, but it's never been one of my favorites. A great song, to be sure, just never really did it for me. B
2) I Won't Back Down- GREAT fucking song. Despite Ed's attempts at it :) A+
3) Love Is A Long Road- LOVE, LOVE this track. It would be a great opening number at his shows (if he hasn't already done it). An instant favorite for me. A+
4) A Face In The Crowd- another strong one. A
5) Runnin' Down A Dream- nothing much I can say. A+
6) Feel A Whole Lot Better- an original would've been better here. Don't care for it. D
7) Yer So Bad- great tune. A
8) Depending On You- Starts off as another simple Petty tune, then that chorus. I'm always a sucker for that chord progression, and I love it no less here. B+
9) The Apartment Song- move along, move along. D
10) Alright For Now- a nice little lullaby. B+
11) A Mind With A Heart Of Its Own- cool Bo Diddly beat. B-
12) Zombie Zoo- predictable verse and chorus that doesn't live up to the bombast of the intro. C

Full disclosure: FMF was the first Petty album I ever bought. I listened to it so much, I literally wore the tape out. It was fun revisiting some of these songs I've not hear in 20 years or more. I have VERY distinct memories of stuff I was doing while some of these songs were playing. It's nice to see it has lived up to my memory. so far, it's still my favorite.

I've already started the Wilburys. I'll include those albums the next go 'round.

Didn't know if I should've included the live album or not. I did listen to it. Other than some interesting covers, nothing real special about it.

Since Stop Draggin' My Heart Around was recorded during the session for one of these I've commented on, I'll go ahead and say it is my all-time favorite track by them. It hits everything just right and even has Duck Dunn playing bass. Fuck yeah. If there's anything above A+, this is it.

One thing that has impressed me probably the most about his career up to this point is that he has had at least one hit song off every album so far. There's not a lot of bands that had been around that long and can say that. Says something about his songwriting skill.

But "Poor House" from Vol. 3 is my favorite of the Petty tunes.

She's the one is such a great record.

I can't believe that was 20 years ago. Geez.

Tom petty is such a solid songwriter. Id say he has less awful songs than many of his contemporaries. He may not hit the highs of Neil. Dylan, Waits, etc..etc... But he so consistently good to excellent.

Finished his book last night. One of the best musician biographies I've ever read. Really great to read about what was happening behind these tunes. Highly recommended.

So, I'm about halfway thru She's The One right now. I'll put up a more in-depth review later after I've listened to more, but I have to say that up to this point, Wildflowers is his masterpiece. Not a dud on it.

How do the Decemberists have a 9 page thread and Petty only 6?

WTF.

To be fair, there is a four-page thread dedicated to "Out of Sand."

I mean it's probably because The Decemberists are better than Tom Petty

Just a thought.
