If only two of the waffling voters would change over to immortality. Hail Hail is a nice little rocker in which eddie says some surprisingly insightful things about love.

Immortality, on the other hand, features some of their most lushly haunting music--a song that is lonely and desolate but is just a slight change in perspective away from opening up into something much more nurturing and forgiving. It's got some of Eddie's most strikingly fractured lyrics and a beautifully understated performance given the way the material encourages an over-the-top woe is me lament.

Plus one of Mike's very best solos, and it functionally closes out Pearl Jam's masterpiece so there's no need to listen to stupid mop.

And there's pretty much never been a bad live version

I will be bitterly disappointed in everyone if Immortality manages to pull ahead.

It's a good song but c'mon.

"Hail Hail" is ragged overdriven and violent. It's love in an abattoir-- chopped liver, thick lacquered lips, gore, despair-fucking amidst steaming entrails tied together with red satin ribbons. Everything about it is red-- dangerously red, feverish, up-against-the-wall, pounding away at the emptiness of everything, red skirt hitched high by bloodied knuckles. And then it opens up at the end, with Mike's chiming arpeggios finally letting some air in. It's the kind of Pearl Jam I want Pearl Jam to be. I understand why people like "Immortality" but to my ears it's staid, plodding, comically self-serious and dullllll. At least compared with a track like "Hail Hail".

It's only kind of those things. Hail hail has its virtue, but red meat danger is not one of them
