I know its dumb to get invested in characters.
Getting "invested" to the point of disregarding anything a movie does artistically because it killed them off is dumb, yes.

For a series built on great, memorable characters, 3 is utterly devoid of them. Occasionally a bald European guy gets eaten, but it doesn't matter which one. They are indistinguishable. And all the pointless tunnel running...

They alien is step down too. When the guy at the end can physically hold his own with it, I just can't see it as much of a threat.

4 completely collapses after the alien sex/alien human baby, but up until then, it's a pretty fun (and funny) movie, if very derivative.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

3 is supported by a terrific cast of colorful character actors. But, in general, I don't think it's a character-driven film. It's much more philosophical than its predecessors.

I'm not sure I agree the first two movies were "built on" great characters.

Ripley, Hicks, Bishop, Burke, and David are big, bold, one-dimensional characters. All the other characters throughout this franchise are one-dimensional and flat. Though I'm excited for Danny McBride in the new one.
Well, I definitely do not agree with that either.

I can't say I was blown away by Danny McBride in this. He serviced the role fine, but nothing outstanding

Alien3 is a damn cool movie.
I loved what fincher did with killing Hicks and Newt, it made Ripley´s character even more fucked and her sacrifice at the end makes so much sense...Her arc is great. Its a character driven movie of course.

Resurrection is such a weird, fun, gory one...its main flaw its that it shows the beast so much, its not a horror movie anymore or a scifi one but a gory campy movie...but at that point i guess thats what you would do with the franchise.
