"a sardonic approach simultaneously with genuine pain" is basically all English men though, if anything it was the happy cheeky chappy Parklife persona that was invented to appeal to "British" brand recognition

I think Damon is more real the older he gets, which is the opposite trajectory to Ed

After a first listen i really liked it. Its very chill, very calm.
The band is strong on this one, and while i would have loved some experimentation like in 13, i also feel this focused album is a very welcome addition to their catalogue.

Good insight -- I agree! But my point of entry with the band was the weirder cuts on S/T, and the more experimental records that came after. Again, this is a fine record, it's just not one I particularly enjoy.
God I loved "13" so much

that weird angular lead guitar on St. Charles Square is wonderful, also the lazy "off-key" way Damon is singing; totally different genre but that's my favourite thing about Chino Moreno's voice

I almost wish "Barbaric" had been the closer

I haven't spent serious time with it, but it feels like a big stepdown from The Magic Whip for me (arguably my favourite Blur album).

It feels very Damon-heavy, I guess. Like he brought in songs for the band to add some colour, with middling results.

The Magic Whip feels like a bunch of quirky, cohesive songs arising out of band jams (which is pretty informed by the circumstances in which it was made, of course).

I also hate the album title.

Better luck next time, fellas!

Impressing Spenno must be the most difficult task in all of music.
