I think this is not a very good standalone song, but a great opener to vitalogy.

Mike, what do you think of this theory? Any truth to it?
Kevin Davis wrote:Has it ever been discussed whether this song (perhaps specifically the noodling at the beginning) is a nod to Sonny Sharrock's free jazz supergroup of the same name?

Sharrock died in 1994, so perhaps there is some relevance (though I think the song goes back to 1993).

Re: Song of the Moment: Last Exit
Its in my top 3 openers, I love it as an album opener. It perfectly warms me up for the album, and goes right into STBC. But I wouldn't listen to it by itself. Its a weird song, I see it more as an intro to set the tone. Eddie is good on it but for me there's just something weird about it that it only works for me if Im listening to the rest of the album after it.wease wrote:You're gonna start losing us...mikejasond wrote:I think this is not a very good standalone song, but a great opener to vitalogy.

This song is one of the few where I think Dave A. really did it the best. On the album at least, don't really know about live.

Jack's my #1, but I agree that Dave was perfect here.Leatherhead wrote:This song is one of the few where I think Dave A. really did it the best. On the album at least, don't really know about live.

i listen to the song by itself all the time. i dont even think its that "weird". the rhythm in the verses is done so well you almost don't even notice the time signature. some of EV's best vocals. i've thrown it on a lot of pj mixes with heavy/loud/fast songs.mikejasond wrote:Its in my top 3 openers, I love it as an album opener. "Lives opened and trashed, look Ma watch me crash" is a brilliant lyric.

Incredible that Ed would routinely nail the "Let my spirit, PAAAASS" line during live shows in 95'. Such a ridiculously hard singing part.

Last Exit is the only song I think Matt Cameron doesn't do well.

Interesting. I've not heard the band play Last Exit in years so will have to seek this out. Annoyingly the single time I saw them play it at a show was back in 96 when I was nonplussed by the song. Top tier PJ now for me.Leatherhead wrote:Last Exit is the only song I think Matt Cameron doesn't do well.

Re: Song of the Moment: Last Exit
It felt weird in 1994 mostly because the guitar tones had changed from the previous albums. It’s not weird now.warehouse wrote:i listen to the song by itself all the time. i dont even think its that "weird". the rhythm in the verses is done so well you almost don't even notice the time signature. some of EV's best vocals. i've thrown it on a lot of pj mixes with heavy/loud/fast songs.mikejasond wrote:Its in my top 3 openers, I love it as an album opener.
