Correct, it does appear history is repeating itself.

Read about Byzant and Constantinople today. Talk about being wiped off the map. A lot of tragedies in our history.

The quote is from a Nobel prize winning author about how the Soviets took over Russia and Eastern Europe.

I'm aware. It is not untrue, but the protests are not the Soviets taking over America, they are saying the same thing about their own roots as black Americans and indigenous people.

They were about bringing attention to systemic racism, which is inequity driven by the bigotry of those in power, something American history (well, global history really) is wrought with. They are now something different.

exactly, so history is not being erased. It is being expanded to include the above more explicitly.

How, exactly, are the protests different--how have they changed such that the protests in general can be characterized as no longer seeking to expose bigotry and racism (primarily through symbolic gestures like tearing down statues) but to, I don't know, abolish private property? Most importantly, at what point did these goals, provided they do exist, shift from being the ones held by a vocal minority to being the explicit goal of a nationwide and relatively heterogeneous protest movement, one whose common denominator is appealing to power ("Arrest the cops") rather than the construction of counter-power which would be necessary to move from the symbolic realm to the material one.
