The weird thing is that they use organ throughout the song. The only time the piano appears is on the beginning and the ending (well, and the bridge). Bizarre decision.

For all the ridiculousness of the piano at the beginning and end, I actually like some of the added stuff in the song more than the song itself. I really like the electric guitar line that comes in on the second verse, as well as the violin parts throughout the song.

I quite like the gospel piano in the bridge, too.

I still don't get why the violinist wasn't actually utilised more. She's buried under a wash of pointless Eno synths. She should be the star here.

I really like the reversed piano chords looping underneath the main ones.

I think this is a hell of a closer for this album. It has a tension releasing effect. It gives the album kind of a happy ending vibe. Some may not like it but it isn't bad at all.
I don't remember if it was mentioned yet but with some of Ed's recent quotes in mind i wonder whether this recent love/death pairing was inspired by the perspective of someone who is dying and worrying about those left behind. Almost like an apology for leaving someone as if the biggest regret in dying is abandoning those,or your significant other in particular, who love you.

It's a bit of a turn up for the books that Ed was thinking more about his kids when he wrote this, rather than his wife.

we really need to put the lyrics in the first posts for these songs.

I can't remember now but he actually said who this one is about in one of the interviews.

He mentioned his daughter before playing it in the Buffalo show, but he said it was about "family". I guess it's just more adaptable than just his model wife.

It might be cool to put up each song's corresponding page in the liner notes. They're all in this Pit thread:

So, we go from Getaway and Mind Your Manners and freedom from religion and wanting to be able to choose what to believe, to Future Days, with being "focused on a prayer" and:
"I believe....
"And I believe cause I can see our future days."
Is that a belief in the afterlife, a future of better times, a belief in God or, at least the possibility of belief in a something higher?
It makes sense that FD ends the record, especially after Yellow Moon's death imagery leading to sort of a refresh or rebirth in Future Days.

Well, this may be my least favorite song on the album... but damnit if I don't sing that "I believe..." line every single time!
And let's face it... the lyrics could've been a lot of worse. The 2nd verse is pretty solid, especially the self-referential bits... "All the complexities and games" (light years) and "All the missing crooked hearts" (smile). The bridge is the only part of the lyrics that I really don't like "All the hurricanes and cyclones..."

Others will disagree, but I don't think it's a literal afterlife. A rebirth through love, the things you care about, the things you leave behind, and the fact that they give you the inspiration, here and now, to fight for a world for them.
