I had a Frank Zappa phase as a kid, and he was a brilliant fucker for sure. Lots of good stuff. I guess my favorite is Hot Rats probably, but the cd i listened the most was a rarities one i got super cheap.

My cousin is big-time into Zappa. I’ve never listed to him at all and can name more of his kids than I can songs.

Brian Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain

This is another really fantastic album that I think goes a little more abstractly into Eno’s experimental side than the last one, but still keeps a strong footing in the form of songwriting Here Come the Warm Jets excelled at. Matter of fact, Third Uncle and The True Wheel f@$&in’ rip. The opening of this album is also quite good in Burning Airlines Give You So Much More, Bakc in Judy’s Jungle, and the fun Fat Lady of Limbourg. You similarly can’t go wrong on this one, though it is a little bit more out there. Loved this one too!

Cluster - Zuckerzeit

Much like Kraftwerk’s Autobahn, this Cluster album digs deep into electronic music, though where Autobahn was really just a couple of tracks that were long, Zuckerzeit is bite sized tracks exploring electronic sounds. While neither are hitting the list of favorite albums, both show interesting sides to a totally different genre of music. I think as a full album, I preferred the Cluster album, Autobahn, the song, is probably the best across both of the albums here. More fun to come.::

Harmonia - Musik von Harmonia

This is a sort of continuation from the last two albums. There is a quick stretch I really liked from this with Sonnenschein and Dino, though I couldn’t much differentiate the remainder. That may be the big challenge of going back to back to back with this style of music, though if there’s an appreciable difference between this electronic music and krautrock, this lands more into the latter. It’s picking out which of the hypnotic rhythms are your favorite.

Dolly Parton - Jolene

Time for some country music. Dolly Parton sounds really good here on a quick album. The title track is the iconic track here, along with I Will Always Love You, which I like no more than when Whitney Houston later covered it. But for me, personally, it’s the only blemish on an otherwise very good album full of quick country bites from a singer who is much better than I ever gave credit.

Willie Nelson - Phases and Stages

Continuing on this quick country theme is one of the many many Willie Nelson albums (and another to follow). I enjoyed on this Willie’s return to the theme, which is a similar if not exact guitar pattern with different pieces of the song peppered into the album. In terms of pure enjoyment, can’t go wrong with Bloody Mary Morning, a true knee slapper of a country song, the sort of stuff that helped make Willie a legend, but ultimately all of this is representative of his abilities to tell stories of loneliness that have their own sense of humor.

Willie Nelson - Red Headed Stranger

This feels like a stronger version of the album before, even though the last one was also great. Outlaws on the run seems like full Willie Nelson, and it makes for a rather quick listen. Similar to the last album, Time of the Preacher acts as a theme song for the album, but the title track was my favorite here, but I don’t again find much of anything to let me down here. It’s all cohesive and solid to me.

Can’t make everyone happy all the time. To be fair, I don’t really “get” Zappa, but I have been trying to continue to give it a shot. I am certainly not capable of providing some deep philosophical breakdown on the album, though I found it very musically interesting and well constructed, I am often negatively distracted by the wild lyrics and sound effects tossed in. But I think I had conveyed that. I don’t think it’s bad music, but it would never be the stuff I am going to run to. I keep trying though.

Waylon Jennings - Dreaming My Dreams

The last in a string of pure country albums for me, though the next one is countrified at the least. On this one, Jennings seems like a smoother country crooner than Willie, and while I wouldn’t quite put this one with the two Nelson albums we just covered, there’s some pretty impressive stuff here, particularly Waymore’s Blues, High Time (You Quit Your Low Down Ways), and the Door Is Always Open. Granted, just like with the electronic stuff, hanging around country too long gets tiresome, but I enjoyed this all the same.

Marshall Tucker Band - Searchin’ for a Rainbow

This might the the long and scenic route away from country and into southern blues rock. The album starts with two country tracks in Fire on the Mountain and the title track, and then weaves in and out of the genre for nearly the entire album. Of note, Walkin’ and Talkin’, Virginia, and the southern rock explosion of Bound and Determined are really excellent here. The winner is that Bound and Determined, which is all the reasons to enjoy this band.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - Nuthin’ Fancy

There’s rarely a more apt title for an album, as this one is full of no fuss straight southern sounds without much in the way of hard deviation, maybe with the exception of Made in the Shade. I don’t know that that song writing is quite as strong as Second Coming, or the blast of energy as cathartic as Pronounced…, but these guys are simply so good it doesn’t matter for the most part. As far as the pick, it’s close really between 3 songs rather than 2: Saturday Night Special, On the Hunt, and Whiskey A Rock n Roller. Picking one, got to go with just the right combo of the Skynyrd sauce in On the Hunt.

The Band - Northern Lights-Southern Cross

This is an interesting album in that three songs absolutely dominate this one: Ophelia, Acadian Driftwood, and It Makes No Difference. All three are amongst my favorite songs by the Band. Now, granted the rest of the album is good, but the drop in quality from the rest is rather stark. Nevertheless, these guys together had a special magic, and it’s always a joy to put their music on to get that feeling.

Up Next: The Band - Northern Lights-Southern Cross

You have chosen wisely. The other acceptable answer is Am I Losin’? Losin’ contains my favorite guitar solo of all time ever. It was an homage to Toy Caldwell and rarely has a guitar solo fit a song and lulled emotions as well for me.

Saturday Night Special is great, but gets overplayed vs the other great tunes on the album. On The Hunt is just a ball out riff that is truly underappreciated. That’s my LS white whale. Of course I’ll probably never see them again live so that will continue to be missed.

Oh yeah. With this album, the original drummer left before recording the album and was replaced by a dude that happened to spend his formative years in the same town and grew up with my future father-in-law.
