Malkin signs an extension with Penguins, 8 years, $76m. He makes more than Crosby now.

Why the hell can teams make trades while the playoffs are still going on?

I don't know, you'd have to ask peeps. I think they have like $23m locked up with Crosby, Malkin and Neal. That's like 40% of the cap.

if im a pens fan, i have no problem letting letang walk. yes, he's one of the most offesive gifted dmen in the league. he's also one of the worst dmen in the league at actually playing defense. id also rather have staal than malkin if im a pens fan. however, im not a pens fan, so fuck them.

If this were anything but Game 1, it could have been a crippling stomach-punch game. Rask was good and the overall Bruins D was still solid (clogging lanes, swiping away rebounds), but they had way too many turnovers coming out of the defensive zone. I think Krug was one giveaway away from being scratched for the next game. The next few weeks are going to be cardiac-y but fun!

I felt the same way about all of Chicago's turnovers. Way too many.

I'm glad the Islanders got rid of him. I would've taken him back for 1-2 year, but a 4 year deal for that guy is insane. He'll put up 40-50 points per year, but his defense has been on a downward spiral the last two seasons.

letang still has 2 years till UFA
i know it was floated he wanted 7 mill per but theres no way in hell he gets that unless the cap is raised the next decade. offense like malkins is hard to replace, defense like letangs isnt.
what will be missed is his offensive skills. he was good for getting the puck on net and the odd man break he could jump in on. what will not be missed is a defenseman who thinks he should be on wing. depres and bortuzzo are ready to step up and be valuable members of the D
my biggest concerns behind malkin and the coaching sitch are dupuis and cooke

Maybe it was just that he had a really bad series against the Bruins, but while watching that series I said to myself at least 20 times: "How the fuck is this guy a Norris nominee?" He's not just not one of the best, he's an awful defender.

hes actually a lot better at defense than what he showed in that series, hes very quick and can cover a lot of ground, he plays the body very well and is good at stick handling (which he tends to do too much when a simple stretch pass or pass off the boards will suffice)
my biggest gripe with him is he pinches way too much and is not held accountable.
i know fluery let in some soft goals, and for that he was yanked. while at the same time letang and malkin coughed up the puck and made stupid plays and yet were still given power play time and where not held accountable
