I'd like to hear true demos from the last two albums before BoB jizzed all over them, using Speed Of Sound as an example

An album of obscure outtakes ain't gonna sell. Hell, albums of new music barely sell anymore.

Even if a quarter of the fan club members are like me, they'll get it on cd and vinyl. That's twice the sells right there.

Come to think of it, I wonder how many of PJ's album sales are double/triple purchases in multiple formats?

I have to go with the prevailing opinion that you're wrong on this one, LV.

It wouldn't be a sales machine but surely that wouldn't be expected of a collection like the one we're discussing (Lost Dogs is a somewhat different situation as it was released while they were under contract to Sony).

A large part of the work is already done, they could hypothetically release it on iTunes/PJ.com/Nugs and probably sell enough to make it worthwhile.

No, they do. Too much. The problem is the die hard fans are the terrible fans with terrible tastes.

The epoch defining studio debut of Of the Earth
I think it would be a good clearing house for a bunch of things we already know about:

- Studio version of Of The Earth
- A bunch of those S/T outtakes (perhaps with vocals over what are currently instrumentals)
- Cold Confession and Let It Ride

Plus the non-album songs from the last few years that haven't been released on CD yet:

- Olé
- Love Reign O'er Me
- Turning Mist
- Santa Cruz
- Better Things, etc.

And whatever else they didn't finish from the last two albums that we don't know about, I'm sure there's at least a few things.

I'm sure they'd have enough to pull together an interesting odds n' sods collection if they wanted to.
I would love to have higher-grade copies of "CC" and "Let It Ride" but I would prefer a new album to any of that other stuff, unless the compilation also promises to unearth additional material from 1991-2003. I live in hope that the "Backspacer" and "LB" sessions produced at least a few lost treasures that were left behind in one of BOB's last-minute panics to purge the final product of anything non-radio-friendly, but I realize that this optimism is not grounded in reality. The original "Lost Dogs" punctuated a period of twelve years that saw the band writing an excess of quality material than could fit on seven studio records; since "Lost Dogs," another twelve years have passed, a period which saw the release of three below-average studio albums from which we've seen very little additional material emerge. So either the sessions for those records were as productive as all their sessions from previous records, and the disappearance of physical B-sides has found these songs with no logical avenue for release -- in which case there should be an abundance of material for a compelling release -- or, it's as I suspect and "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" both used everything from their respective sessions, as the band's intonation that their new process involves simply discarding works in progress which they feel aren't working suggests to me that they're really just not finishing any more material than they have to. I'd love for it to be the former, but if it's the latter, and the compilation album in question will be padded in excess of 60% with songs like "Santa Cruz" and "Turning Mist," I'll take another "Lightning Bolt."
