There Goes My Miracle works so much better in the context of the album.
I think all the singles do. I was honestly pretty lukewarm on all of them when they were released individually. Now I think "Tuscon Train" is probably my favorite thing here, with "Hello Sunshine" not far behind.
Speaking of this, I think it’s worth mentioning that this a flawlessly sequenced album, which is a real rarity for Bruce. I think that’s a big part of why I like it so much. Every song fits just where it should. It’s paced perfectly, there’s no flab, it never lulls or grows tiresome. Everything’s arranged so that sun shines in right when it needs to. Beautiful work.
And magnificent sounding. Bruce must have actually let his sound engineers do their jobs, for a change.
I don’t yet know how I feel about it overall. This style of music is usually at its best when accompanied by either especially poetic lyrics or by very simple, sparse ones. Bruce does some of his typical “replace wit with detail” work here, and it misaligns a bit for me. But then, the cinematic qualities he’s pushing give those details more of an underlying sense of narrative than they’ve had in some time, so...
Sleepy Joe’s Cafe could be a Roger Clyne cover, and I love it.

One thing I enjoy here, which I also enjoyed about Tell Me by Tom Waits and a few other albums in recent years, is hearing these old artists who as young men felt like they had to abandon Roy Orbison in order to follow Bob Dylan come back around, and wonder if maybe they didn’t miss out on some of Roy’s lessons.

I will say Sleepy Joe's Cafe doesn't really do it for me.
But the rest, the rest(!), is magnificent. Perfect theme and he threads the needle all the way through.
Hello Sunshine is one of the those subtle tracks that takes a little journey and by listen 7 becomes like the greatest thing you've ever heard.
The use of strings throughout is right on the money.
What I wouldn't give to hear him do this full album in a small theater.

I finally watched Bruce on Broadway on Netflix. Show was even better than I remembered. Just so we’ll thematically planned out to map his journey.
Okay, back to Western Stars which yes is very epic. I would, instead of a small theater, like to see these songs arranged live with an orchestra.

in terms of "feel," this album somewhat reminds me of a mixture of beck's morning phase and colors.

This album is brilliant. I love Hitch Hiking - what a fucking wonderful way to open this album.

Sleepy Joe? Im not feeling this one but it does feel like a nice little detour and palette cleanser which helps hold up the rest of the album.
Bruce sounds wonderful on this album.
I think Tuscon Train is the catchiest damn thing. I love how the drums come in halfway throughout the verses in more of a 4/4 time. I love how the bridge gently slides out of itself right back into the tail end of a verse. Its brilliant.
