one thing that we all noticed while walking by Parliament is the protests outside were pretty quiet. They weren't shouting, there weren't mobs of people, it was pretty calm. There was one guy over by a news camera that was talking loudly - again, not shouting - but that was it. The leave folk had some pretty professionally done placards and giant tarp signs that screamed outside money while the remain people were rocking some hand-made stuff that looked passionate and personal.

Also the leave people were all retirees while the remain seemed to be about my age or younger, so there's that too.

Pelosi again yesterday warned the new British Government that if they threaten the good Friday agreement and leave in Northern Ireland in any way, there’ll be no US/UK trade deal.

Their current war footing no deal stance is utterly incompatible with the peace agreement.

So they’re planning to implement direct rule back in Northern Ireland if it’s no deal.
This tears up the good Friday agreement. Will see a return to violence.
This will start all sorts of horror here and In the uk.

A committee set up in the United States to protect the Belfast Agreement has warned the incoming Northern Ireland Secretary that a future US-UK trade deal will be “all but impossible” if the peace accord is undermined.

The bipartisan group, which includes five former US ambassadors to Ireland, two former state governors and foreign policy experts including Nancy Soderberg, said it was “deeply concerned” at UK prime minister Boris Johnson’s rejection of the backstop last week.

“We remain deeply concerned given the new prime minister’s recent statement in the Commons that there can be no Irish backstop in the withdrawal agreement, even one with a time limit,” states the letter to Julian Smith that has been seen by The Irish Times. “We view the belief that alternative arrangements can easily solve the problem of the Irish Border with a healthy scepticism as do many experts.”

Noting house speaker Nancy Pelosi’s comments to The Irish Times last week that Congress will not sign off on a trade deal if the peace agreement is undermined, the letter states that a trade deal will be “all but impossible”.

Funny isn’t the point here. Delighted to see he explained Johnson’s buffoonery is completely calculated and meticulously contrived in order to deceive and escape from real scrutiny. The UK is only maybe half aware of it. And for the reasons Oliver outlines.

Boris is a very carefully crafted character of his own design. It’s a huge act. And he flip flops in and out of it all his life. But now? He really can’t.

And the US China India and the stock markets and world bank and every other country looks on as Great Britain is the only country In the world operating solely on WTO terms.
