I think those that succeed at humour, only do so with a perfectly balanced combination of wit, timing, and intelligence.

That last prerequisite is distinctly lacking in 99% of the internet. Having said that, there is certainly an abnormally high amount around this forum (but there are still some douches).

There are, but it is also useful to draw distinctions between how you interact with the people you know and people you just met.

You're right, people on this forum do often seem abnormally high.

You're right, people on this forum do often seem abnormally high.

Look I am always kinda stunned that pointing this out is even necessary.

I guess I don't consider that I've 'met' anyone online. So if I think a newbie is saying something stupid, I'll tell them. The people who have / will become friends to me online will do so not because I've deliberately befriended them, but because we've generally enjoyed banter together and we understand each other's feelings, opinions and sense of humour. So meeting someone, and being friends with them, is a byproduct of fooling around on the Internet. I like making friends, but until we have, we're just a couple of people throwing around opinions and discussing stuff without any fear of repercussion.

I used to think differently, but after various hurts and disappointments I've become jaded and now I'm just fooling around online.

Incidentally, I don't really have this basic social skill. I mean, sometimes I have it better than others, but some of my reading has suggested that my neurological condition is a factor in making it very difficult to decide who is my friend and supporter and who is just a colleague who doesn't give a fuck. In essence I'm very trusting, and if you're friendly I'll want to be your friend. But that attitude has landed me in some shit in the past, and lately too. Because sometimes people you thought were your friends are just fucking around and you've just been words on a screen.

I used to enjoy the Pit for being emotionally open to each other. People had really close friendships there. I miss that. I've enjoyed this forum immensely, and I think I've made friends, but I've had to adjust my schtick quite a lot.

I agree there is lots of childish/trolling behavior here and it detracts from the overall point of RM, I am guilty of it sometimes, but it's mostly not meant to insulting. It's just people venting real life stress into other avenues. What kinda pisses me off is when fans intentionally mislead others by posting false "leaked" information or demos. Stip.

And if you have a real psychological problem with people calling you a 'douche bag' online, you should recognize that about yourself and probably should stick to Facebook and/or semi-pro blogs. I've been called much worse on this board plenty of times for posting opinions unpopular with RM's cool kids on certain things and you know what? If "asshole" is the counter argument, they already know they are in the wrong.

Think of it like this. I'll joke around with students at the end of a semester in a way I wouldn't at the start, and students I've had in several classes and known over several years will take shots at me (or vice versa) that they would NEVER do at the start of a semester when we first met. Once you know someone, and you have a sense of their personality, and you both have an understanding of the overall dynamics between you, there is a lot more room to joke around, to be hostile, to kid, because you know the boundaries.

If I started a stupid thread and everyone jumped down my throat about it that would be fine. If a new poster started a thread in good faith, and it was a bit earnest, I'll be much more solicitous of it because that person is new, doesn't know the boundaries and personalities involved.

yeah, that april fools thing was not the home run we had hoped for.

But regarding the second point, I don't think the burden needs to be on the non assholes to put up with the assholes.

Yeah, that's totally fair. If I've ever responded in a cynical way to a new poster starting a new thread, especially if I've read the same thread a million times, I might reply in a snarky way. But it's almost always meant as a half-joke. Recently, it's made me really laugh every time someone has said 'Hi, I'm a longtime fan, short time lurker and would really like these songs etc. etc.' but there's been too many to get snarky at, so I've decided to just keep quiet. A snarky remark to all of them would've looked dickish.

harmless, I don't think you're much of a problem. Chances are pretty good if you are even questioning whether or not you are means that you aren't.

I own the most most unpopular presence on the whole board and it doesn't matter how funny or cool I think whatever the post is, I'll get shot down, but the same people seem to love my second account. Go figure

i don't think any of the regular posters here are disliked, Dime. This board would be worse for your absence.
