It’s a little bit weird to me that dvd often sells better than blu-rays, so many years after blu-rays won the hd battle. Now 4k is here, and it’s very expensive and here it only fills a small part of a large shop, while dvds occupy a larger space compared to blu-rays than they did 5-6 years ago. Many must not care about quality.

In that way streaming is positive, because it’s usually a lot better quality than buying dvds.

This isn't necessarily true, especially if someone's internet speed is lacking. Yes, streaming can deliver HD and UHD resolution, but the compression usually leaves a lot to be desired. It's still a long way off from comparing to discs in that regard. And as we're seeing with bitrates being throttled on streaming services during this corona stuff, you can't exactly rely on the quality of streaming to remain static.

That said, video quality is generally a niche interest. Most people don't give a shit.

Its pretty remarkable that dvd are still around.

I’ve bought or rented a fair amount from the Apple shop (got a 4k tv and an apple tv 4k). And it’s always miles better than dvds. Their 4k content feels more like watching a regular blu-ray. Certainly not as good as a 4k blu-ray.

I generally agree but it can depend how picky you are about compression. And it’s not always foolproof. I’ve watched DVD transfers from favorite physical media label, Vinegar Syndrome, that have honestly been more tolerable than some of the worst 4K streams I’ve seen (for example, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs in 4K HDR on Netflix is AWFUL with compression artifacts).

I think you guys just illustrated why DVD’s are still the go to.

I think blu ray and then 4K probably came too soon after it. People are slow to change up to the new thing but i Dunno about where you are but it’s all kind of OTT expensive here still. Like you can get a DVD player for €10. Blu ray will still run a couple of hundred. And that’s without the TV

My pal worked on the first few iPhones and was able to tell us they already had iPhone 7&8 but you can’t just drop that on people you’ve got to go slowly. Yeah it also maximizes profit but introducing new tech even something as simple as home entertainment takes time.

Cheapness and convenience are paramount in this arena for the majority, and the cultural import of movies in general has been sharply declining for at least a decade. Blu-ray came along about 10 years after DVD, and 4K about 10 years after Blu-ray. That’s plenty of time. But the mainstream interest just isn’t there and it’s never gonna be.

Yep, sure. I think it’s fair to say that quality is generally niche.

I agree that Blue Ray came too soon after DVD and their were expensive. And you had to change your setup. Most people dont really care about that stuff.

It wouldn’t have mattered if they had waited. The 1-2 punch of DVD being “good enough” and the ascendancy of streaming relegated Blu-ray to a boutique interest. 4K even moreso.
