good or bad, with RA, what we were getting was real.

i prefer real.
Is this about autotune tweaking? Because PJ used it before.
it's about the artificially youthful sounding, higher register voice used on getaway, the fixer, and others over the last 5 years or so.

autotune tweaking bothers me. fake young eddy, however they manage to create that in the studio, really bothers me.

On the whole I agree, but I also can't say which bits are fake and which aren't, so the argument doesn't hold up as well as it would otherwise. There's no reason why he couldn't be hitting all the notes on a good day in the studio. It's very different to singing live.

I remember McP posting about BOB editing the vocals to make room for the band. The lowest frequencies of a track are usually cut to some degree to ngive room to the bass and drums. That's what it sounds like to me . A lot of the lower frequencies eq-ed out that makes the vocals sound thin and well anoying - it doesn't sound pleasant. My point being it may not be a consequence of wanting the vocals to sound in a certain way.

My biggest thing about the vocals throughout the album is just that they're too loud.

But it's Eddie Vedder and the Pearl Jams, so of course he's gonna be louder than everything else

When you got Eddie Vedder, you gotta have him good and loud.

BoB grates on me as much as anyone, but he gets the vocals right. EdVed is the defining sound of the band. If you take him out, they could be alot of other bands. With him, they are distinctly PJ. The band knows this, and they simply want to play to their strengths.

As far as if it's fake, unless you can point out where specifically you think it's fake, you don't have an argument. I wish Getaway was a live staple, but maybe it's just one of those ones where it's this one moment of awesomeness that's hard to replicate. I feel like Rearviewmirror is like that, I've never heard a live version that even touches the studio version, from a purely vocal standpoint. But I feel like if they can play RVM live they can play Getaway.

BoB clearly doesn't grate on Tuolumne as much as anyone.

Even if this is true, it doesn't have much to do with the volume of Ed's vocals in the mix with the rest of the band. Making him so much louder that it doesn't sound as if he's fighting with the band actually makes his voice sound weaker rather than stronger. It doesn't benefit the musical performance or the vocal one.

yup. I think Eddie sounds great, but he's not elevated by the music on most of the tracks, and the music is diminished by his volume. Lightning Bolt is probably the worst offender. It works the best on Yellow Moon

i think rvm from the atlanta show on the radio in 94 is better than the studio version.

getaway's live vocals are clearly lower than the studio version. no one knows if it was studio tricks or just a good vocal take in the studio version? its one of my favorite new one's.

Its weird. My enjoyment of this song has only gone down over time. I don't like the way Eddie sounds. I think I was pretty cool with it at first, but lately Im just like ehhhhhhhhhhhhh
