Here's my read: Preternaturally effortless rock drummer who lacks any of the requisite ego to overplay against the song; any band cutting a record would be lucky to have him in the studio. At the same time, he's not terribly exciting to watch play.

but if you were suddenly surrounded by a group of thugs, you would want him behind the kit as Porch starts playing and you defeat them one-by-one

Ok, Ohana is in about a month orso. Should I prepare for a disappointment? What if it's Klinghoffer? Or Zak Starkey (who's a fine drummer but IMO a terrible fit for PJ). Or should I look forward to an exiting announcement like Matt Chamberlain or Stephen Perkins? Or will I have a more wait-and-see attitude? Ok ok, they also went for Josh Freese?

I think the only one I’d be disappointed to see as the “new drummer” is Klinghoffer. Even then, I’m at a Pearl Jam concert so I’m happy.

The drum parts on Ten are among my favorite Pearl Jam drum parts ever recorded, but after watching this video, I'm not sure I liked what I heard.
Dave seemed really stiff to me, almost like he was afraid of making a mistake, using the same fill over and over again. By the end of the video, he loosened up a little, but I'm not sure this is the kind of drumming I expected from someone being considered for Pearl Jam's new drummer position.

I would actually say unexciting drummer. He only covered one PJ set in '23? (Could be wrong here)

edit: Decided to revisit this gig and will go a bit further in that he is not very good.

from the clips i saw, he looks like drumming is more of a hobby than a professional skill. he makes up for it somewhat by feeling it, knowing the PJ songs, and being into it. but he is not refined and better suited for a wedding cover band than an actual tour drummer

It is funny how many of us just assumed he was. No matter who it is, I hope he was considered.

klinghoffer did his best filling in on those shows and it was better than nothing but no, he’s not a great drummer and many of the songs were out of his depth. him being employed as the full time new drummer would be terrible news.

Nah, it probably wont be Klinghoffer. I would be extremely disappointed. If it's Starkey I also would be disappointed, his style is very classic rock. Not punk rock at all. Not that they need a punk drummer, but a more versatile drummer would take them much further. Like Chamberlain, Freese or Perkins.
