The only way to evaluate this is for you to define when he wasn't a smug pretentious douche.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen Fred Armisen NOT schticking. Is his smugness part of the schtick?

Maybe he’s the perfect example of becoming one with schtick, and neither can be separated

It does!! For the first time these arent drums driven songs. Thats ok by me....but the sound of the drum is so mudded at times, its really gets lost.

Ah, yeah, I can understand that.

I did the last three records, starting with Center and going back, last night. That was a lot of fun. But I had to go to bed before I was able to get to One Beat. Looking forward to hearing it some time this week.

I fought lush pop music for a long time. Ditto more electronic and synthetic sounds. I was a real pretentious dick about that stuff for a really long time. Now I'm discovering that I want huge lush sounds and catchy hooks. Not sure if it's reactionary or if it's been there all along. Or maybe I'm just changing, I don't know.
I still get down for scrappy and abrasive, to be sure. Bone Machine is still my favorite album of all time. And I still like In Utero more than Nevermind. But this S-K album is really hitting a sweet spot for me right now. I loved revisiting The Woods last night. It was fun to hear them doing something different. But this big, poppy, hooky stuff has got me GOING lately.

None of the other songs on this album really did it for me, but "Reach Out" is immediately one of my favorite S-K songs. More than anything, I think it's the drama in Corin's voice that really sells S-K for me, and this is the one song where Annie's production really plays that up. It sounds like a lost Pat Benetar hit from 1986 or something -- I love it.

The vocal is incredible. I love the way she phrases the song. There's so much character in it.

yeah i agree with this too. Its not like they did a trap album guys. They are the same band and they experimented a little different this time. These views remind me of PJ doing Backspacer.

There is some fantastic guitar work here, though. Some of it is really crunchy and some of it is really intricate. There are a lot of flavors here.

yeah, SK sound is still there. Specially in the vocal arrangements.

It's somewhere in the middle for me. The vocal arrangements are still there, but the music is hit or miss. Sometimes it is too sparse or missing the interplay that is a staple of their previous work. Other times it is absolutely there, with a new sound (synths, crunchy modulated guitar, etc.).

I love the way The Dog/The Body is arranged, vocally. That bridge!
But I really just adore the way Carrie sings, especially the verses. The way the words fit (sometimes jaggedly) in the melody. The sentiment is hits hard for me, too. But it's really the way the voices use the words and melody that chokes me up. And man, does that song choke me up. I've gotten weepy every time I've listened to it.
