yay Lost Dogs 2, a compilation of half-conceived perfunctory recordings; the perfect follow up to Lightning Bolt, a compilation of half-conceived perfunctory recordings

The epoch defining studio debut of Of the Earth
I think it would be a good clearing house for a bunch of things we already know about:

- Studio version of Of The Earth
- A bunch of those S/T outtakes (perhaps with vocals over what are currently instrumentals)
- Cold Confession and Let It Ride

Plus the non-album songs from the last few years that haven't been released on CD yet:

- Olé
- Love Reign O'er Me
- Turning Mist
- Santa Cruz
- Better Things, etc.

And whatever else they didn't finish from the last two albums that we don't know about, I'm sure there's at least a few things.

I'm sure they'd have enough to pull together an interesting odds n' sods collection if they wanted to.
I would love to have higher-grade copies of "CC" and "Let It Ride" but I would prefer a new album to any of that other stuff, unless the compilation also promises to unearth additional material from 1991-2003. I live in hope that the "Backspacer" and "LB" sessions produced at least a few lost treasures that were left behind in one of BOB's last-minute panics to purge the final product of anything non-radio-friendly, but I realize that this optimism is not grounded in reality. The original "Lost Dogs" punctuated a period of twelve years that saw the band writing an excess of quality material than could fit on seven studio records; since "Lost Dogs," another twelve years have passed, a period which saw the release of three below-average studio albums from which we've seen very little additional material emerge. So either the sessions for those records were as productive as all their sessions from previous records, and the disappearance of physical B-sides has found these songs with no logical avenue for release -- in which case there should be an abundance of material for a compelling release -- or, it's as I suspect and "Backspacer" and "Lightning Bolt" both used everything from their respective sessions, as the band's intonation that their new process involves simply discarding works in progress which they feel aren't working suggests to me that they're really just not finishing any more material than they have to. I'd love for it to be the former, but if it's the latter, and the compilation album in question will be padded in excess of 60% with songs like "Santa Cruz" and "Turning Mist," I'll take another "Lightning Bolt."
good point

the optimistic alternative is that they are more inclined to save anything they don't use in case they want to utilize it later on, given the success of lost dogs (we know that the S/T sessions produced a lot of music and none of that has intentionally seen the light of day).

Wish fulfillment in all likelihood, but it's not crazy.

guys we're overlooking the not-so-obvious... Maybe we're finally getting that EP that Mike keeps talking about!

I'd love to hear fully fleshed out versions of "anything in between" and "puzzles and games"

Lost Dogs II would be very welcome indeed. I also don't believe that there are many songs in the vaults from the BS and LB sessions. Pendulum and SBM are from the BS sessions....

But there are still enough leftovers for another 2 disc set:

-Songs that got excluded from Lost Dogs: Leatherman, Angel, Long Road, Sonic Reducer, Happy When Im crying, Just A Girl, Last Soldier*..

-Songs that got released since: Olé, Santa God, Santa Cruz, Turning Myst, Off the Earth*, Falling down*, Love Reign O'er Me,

-Songs that leaked: Let it Ride, Cold Confession, Anything in Between, Sunburn, Chinese, Im still here

And even if they have only a handfull of songs in the vault there's already enough to make this 2 disc set. I can only imagine that there's more in the vault from the S/T sessions than just LiR and CC. But even if there are only 5-6 songs on LD II that we don't know yet I would be more than happy with the release :)

If it's anything other than another album in 12 months it'll be a No Code reissue, probably with Yield.

Or they'll just announce the nugs.net deal like its a big exciting new release of live shows.

I think there is more from from all the sessions (excluding TEN) than we realize. I know prior to the Vs./Vitalogy box set, Mike was talking about some song from the Vs. sessions called "Indian Beetles" that Ed had just recently put vocals on. Since that didn't show up on the box set, the logical choice would be to put it on a Lost Dogs 2 type set.

I have no doubt that there are probably 20 extra songs hanging out on the shelves from the last 3 albums... the question is how complete they are. Are they just basic song structures? Much like the demos of S/T that popped up with Ed just mumbling.

Question: If there were really basic song demos from Vs–Yield... would you rather hear those with possible Ed mumbling melodies on top? Or would you rather have them, as current PJ, flesh them out and finish them off as complete songs?

I definitely agree here. I love hearing the progression of a song from start to finish. But it's PJ, so we know they aren't that cool.

Basically, the question with PJ is: Would you rather hear an unfinished song and wonder what it could have been? Or would you rather hear a revisited demo they turned into a full song, and wonder how good it was...

I'm not remotely interested in hearing Yield outtakes ruined by Ed's awful newish singing habits and the bumbling efforts of their current mastering house of choice.

and that's exactly why if they're going to do that they should also include the unadulterated takes
