Not to rile you up, but you’re on and I’m on. I listened to the record. A teacher at my school used to teach Kendrick in IB English. When I took over the class, I dropped him because I wasn’t comfortable, and a portion of that was the misogyny in the lyrics. You’re a top 3 liberal here. How do look past it? Don’t tell me it’s satire either. I am not judging at all. I’m genuinely curious.epilogue wrote:Kendrick is the #2 recorddaft twat wrote:No. The number 2 record.epilogue wrote:You want me to list all twelve records?daft twat wrote:What’s between Dark Matter and this?epilogue wrote:I've listened to GNX front to back about eight times now. Great response. Thanks, Trag.tragabigzanda wrote:Sorry daft, I’m not sure how familiar you are with Kendrick? My short answer is that his entire oeuvre is filled with — maybe even defined by — the paradoxes of his experience. For every misogynistic lyric, there’s another lyric about his commitment to certain women in his life; his struggles with fidelity; the weight and desire to be a model for his community in direct conflict with his baser desires, the cyclical nature of his own generational trauma, etc.
Probably more than any other rapper I’m familiar with, I’d caution against taking any single lyric, or lyrical motif, and using it to make assumptions about the guy, or his impact on society. I think he’s nothing if not a deeply complex, layered person; one who’s done an amazing job of putting that complexity to music, and marketing his psyche as an extension thereof.
I totally read this as your colleague used to be Kendrick's teacher, and after you took over the class you dropped him from the IB programdaft twat wrote:A teacher at my school used to teach Kendrick in IB English. When I took over the class, I dropped him because I wasn’t comfortable
