It makes Fin look weak. It makes lightsabers look weak. They aren't relics of ancient power or dangerous weapons in incompetent hands, they are just swords in a world of laser guns and space ships. It accomplishes nothing. It's not only pointless, its detrimental to the movie.
I don't think the purpose of the scene was to make anyone look strong or weak. It was about struggle, but not for dominance. Those two were fighting for two very different reasons. Finn was fighting to survive, to defend a friend, to avenge another. Ren was injured physically, distraught emotionally, and very insecure mentally. He was getting in his own way.

I mean, someone else please? I don't know how else I inferred this shit unless it is there in some capacity, but I feel like this was put out there for the audience to piece together, although with some subtlty.

I partially agree, kaius (kouse). I think the scene was mostly to show Ren's inability or inexperience. It was just a little far fetched for me that finn's anger was enough to allow him to compete in a sword fight with someone who was training with it regularly.

And i get that stormtroopers may have trained in that shit, but he wasn't a regular sword user or carrier and only even carried a blaster when not cleaning toilets

He barely competes though, and after he sounds Ren Ren ends the fight

Look, I'm trained in a lot of different firearms and some hand to hand combat. But if i went up against a fencing expert in a sword fight, they'd slice me on the first swing

I just don't think Finn did anything special in the fight... I think anybody of above average strength or athleticism could be dangerous with a lightning sword, especially when their opponent has been shot in the gut. But I can see how it is a stretch for some.

As far as the janitor thing---maybe I misinterpreted things, but I took that as he was in sanitation when working on the starkiller base, but has been off base training as a stormtrooper now for a while and just recently had his first battle on Jakku.

It wasn't purposeful, but it inadvertently made everyone look bad. Kylo didn't seem too hurt, and Finn was shown to be roughly the worst fighter in the galaxy up to that point.

It would have worked better if they really sold Kylo's injury and Finn goes apeshit similar to the way Luke did to Vader in Return of the Jedi.

Its just weird that the script would call for Finn to get beat up not once but twice, and once by some no name storm trooper! That's pretty rough. No wonder they made him the janitor. Why is he in some elite kill team again? Everyone seems to know him, but he doesn't seem to be any good at anything.

Ok. Him losing to the stormtrooper is a good point. I have no rebuttal for that at this time.

I don't remember if I've mentioned this yet, but the only thing I loved about this movie was the tic Driver did where he punched his rib after he was wounded. That was an awesome touch.

I really like everything Driver. Except his huge ears and ugly face. Han's son should have been slightly more handsome.

BTW, didn't Finn say something like "I'm gonna kick your ass now!" but then Kylo walks over to him and strikes first! Kinda ruins it.

Ren tosses Rey into tree.
Finn weeps over her.
Ren calls Finn a traitor angrily.
Finn lights up the blue saber.
Ren claims the blue saber.
Finn taunts him "come and get it it" but then surprisingly attacks first.
