What movies are you watching?

Rainy weekends this time of year suck. But it's an excuse to go to the movies though. I saw Jungle Book this afternoon. The visuals were great, glad I saw it in the theaters. Of course the story is well known but I'm disappointed they deviated from the animated version's ending. At least this way there's an opening for Jungle Book 2 from the studio's point of view.
Room has been sitting a top my Netflix queue for a while and figured it would make some nice, light viewing before Game of Thrones. Of course Larson did a good job but the kid was fantastic; the best performance by someone so young I had watched in a while. The escape comes midway through and it was one of the most intense set ups and scenes I had seen in years. I admit it got me a little teary eyed. Really good performances throughout but I doubt I will re-watch again any time soon.

Yeah it drags on a bit, and Carell can be a bit much, but I like it.

Watched Ted 2. It was pretty bad, as was the first one, but there were a few moments. My favorite came in a court scene where Ted starts saying Beetlejuice over and over, and Mark Walberg with a dead serious face says something "whoa, what are you doing, we don't want that guy running around in here". I realize as I type that it doesn't sound funny at all, but in the movie, I was somewhat amused with that scene.

Started 'The Big Short', but started it late and got too tired to finish it. I got about 30min left, and overall I am enjoying it. The subject matter is interesting, and I used to be in that world (worked at Freddie Mac), but the delivery is a little off. I can't quite describe it, but something is taking me out of the movie. Maybe it's the 3 intertwined but separate stories going on, maybe I was just too tired, I don't know.

Watched Mistress America last night. Didn't love it. Probably my least favorite Noah Baumbach film, so far. Definitely had some great moments. Greta was fantastic. I laughed a lot. But the movie was really weird. I hesitate to call it "bad" but it was off, somehow. And it crumbles entirely at the end.

I have a visceral reaction to advertising and promotion. There's just something about salesmanship that grates on me on a very base level and I react very negatively towards it. I want those people to suffer and I want their enterprises to fail.

You should still give it a go. You might find something in it that I didn't and we can chat about it. I feel like I missed something. There are very bold choices being made, and they are clearly choices, but it just didn't quite work for me.

Squid and the Whale is a brilliant film. I don't think empathy is a problem in that film. Nor Frances Ha, which is also brilliant. Nor While We're Young, which isn't brilliant but is solid and infinitely rewatchable.

I could maybe see that in Greenburg, but I'm not sure I'd criticize the film for lack of empathy or whatever. And I certainly wouldn't call Baumbach a mean-spirited film maker. I can't wrap my head around that at all.

I'm not arguing your point, but I'm curious: Do you think you'll start liking different stuff if/when you're settled in CO and life is happier? Like, will food taste better? Will movies be viewed more favorably? The answer may surprise you.

I already respond to lots of films very favorably, so this is silly.

I think you're right about Baumbach. But Greta Gerwig is a bundle of love and sunshine, so his movies with her have some beauty in them. Which is why I both love Mistress America and think that it is one of the most disjointed films I can think of.
