I feel like they could have solved that in the editing room. Killed off Leia in that attack on Snoke's ship and kept Luke alive.

I'm not sure how that would have messed up the story they were trying to tell about Luke.

Luke's story had to play out the way it did for that story to work. I believe the plan has always been for Luke to appear in 9, even with how TLJ ended. If Lucas had made the movie Luke may have lived. But once Rian killed him, which again, needed to happen for the story told in TLJ, I believe Luke as a Force Ghost was always on the table.

Even if Carrie had lived, we would have seen Luke again.

Almost makes me even sadder. We just never saw enough of Luke and Leia together after they found out they're siblings.

I'm 90% positive we would have gotten/will get Luke as a force ghost in IX no matter what. It needs to happen to close out his story
