You keep saying "it's all right there". So what? That doesn't lessen the cheapness of how they announced him to the general audience. "Oh by the way, that bad guy you thought was dead 35 years ago? Yeah he's alive, but we won't show you how, just trust us."

Look, we all know that I'll stan fucking HARD for this movie (and the entire ST in general). For example, I LOVE that they brought Palpatine back. I also really love that they just say it flat out in the opening crawl. But even I'm kinda bothered by the lack of explanation re: Palpatine.

It really still bugs me that we don't get a real explanation for how he came back. And, yes, it would have been nice to have more hints layered throughout the other two films. That's unfortunate but not that big of a deal to me.

All I'm saying is... I don't think it was cheap. But I do think it all could have and should have been handled better. But that's true of a lot of stuff in Star Wars. Luke and Leia being related, for example. Or Leia remembering Padme. Goddamn Jar Jar Binks!

Yeah, i agree that how they told Palplatine´s comeback was really poor. But JJ hinted about it in TFA.

If Justice League does well next year, I expect to see the JJ cut of Rise in 2022.

Star Wars did it before. Im not mad about Palps coming back....its how they chose to bring him back that bothers me.

Still im super exited to see this one again when TCR finish.

It's a fine move. They've done it before and really succeeded. Look at Maul. The issue is that they decided to wrap up "the saga" in the 11th hour. And so it was rushed and less satisfying than it could have been.

He and his return is all over the canon material since back in TFA.
The aftermath trilogy, the new Thrawn books, the comics, dam now even one of the video games is roughly based

IF you have problems with how Palpatine came back, you haven’t watched and paid attention. He’s the master of the long game for his own ends.

If you need a 20 minute segment of they film showin loads of sith cultists doing dark side rituals to rehome his evil spirit in a new body you have to remember Star Wars is a family friendly story first. And owned by Disney second.


This film has problems. Palpatine isn’t one of them.

I dont want to dive in just now on everything from this one because i need to still pay attention to TCR but that was my guess back in the day.

Um, I don't agree with that tweet at all.

You shouldn't have to rely on ancillary materials to make sense of what's in a movie. The movie should stand on its own. If it can't do that, it's failed as a movie. Can the outside stuff be used to enhance the film? Sure. But it shouldn't rely on that that material to be successful as a movie.

If Palpatine was telegraphed to return in all that other stuff like dime says, but then he's just suddenly dropped in a movie with no explanation, it's a failed move.

Dime, you're working really, REALLY hard ... too hard ... to make the Emperor's return fit into the 1st two sequel movies. It's an embarrassing hill to die on.

Pretty sure if you go back to this autumn, long before the movie came out, several of us said Palpatine was going to return. And then people said about the same as Wease wrote now. Like it would be a weird and a big surprise if it happened.
