My favorite non-OT sw movie? How about "most tolerable?"
honestly I wouldn't be upset if I never watched a PT, ST or SW story movie again.

There have been good, solid points here. This is not one of them. Sorry, wease. I love you to death but I cannot get on board with you here. I was right -- the movie is not at all nostalgia for nostalgia's sake. And it's certainly not an ROTJ remake at all. That's a bizarre take that I just do not understand at all.wease wrote:durdencommatyler wrote:It won't be naked nostalgia. I'm confident it'll be thematically satisfying and necessary. It won't be "nostalgia" as much as connective tissue.E.H. Ruddock wrote:I hope they don't fill this with too much nostalgia, though.
The more I think about this, the more convinced I am that Abrams really had no idea what to do. The whole thing is nothing but nostalgic fan service tucked into a ROTJ remake designed to disguise the fact that story wise, there's absolutely nothing there.
I think JJ had TOO MANY ideas. And I believe he was happy pushing many of those ideas into Episodes 10-12. Once Disney and Lucasfilm decided that this was the end of the (newly branded and marketed) "Skywalker Saga" that's when things went squirrly. Keep in mind that JJ had less time to make this movie than he should have. And he basically had the task of not only wrapping up this trilogy but 9 movies! And he had basically a year to figure out how to scrap an old script and all the pre-production work that had begun on that script and wrap everything up -- which, again, wasn't originally the goal.
Bringing Palpatine back is thematically satisfying and works well within the arc of the 9 films. I'm sure, had JJ known when he did TFA that 9 was the end of it all, he would have made different choices and the thing would have been very, very different. Disney made a couple of mistakes, for sure. But I don't think JJ is to blame for the majority of them nor the biggest of them (re: TROS; let's not talk about TFA and a subjective quality argument). They should have pushed the movie back a year to given him and his team time.
The storytelling doesn't work for a lot of people. I'm not here to tell anyone they are wrong to dislike it. That's stupid. But there is a lot going on. There is a lot to the story. And the emotional arcs resonate with the overall themes of Star Wars as a whole. That's not nothing. And I don't think it's fair to sluff all of that off just because there are other things to dislike. Doesn't mean you have to like the movie or the trilogy. I respect that. Just trying to be fair.

We can only judge the movie that is presented to us. The emotional/thematic arcs may have worked with more time to develop (both on screen and with the production ). There is simply just too much going on in this to have any time to process what is happening. The Palpatine resurrection/cloning being the prime example.durdencommatyler wrote:There have been good, solid points here. This is not one of them. Sorry, wease. Snoke’s death is one of the most thrilling moments in any Star Wars film. It flipped expectations on their head and made me think anything was possible after the New Hope Redux that was TFA. That it didn’t ultimately turn out to mean much in the context of RoS is disappointing but the moment, followed by the jaw-dropping Holdo Maneuver, is still an all-timer for me.Anders wrote:Snoke was certainly one of the worst things about the movies. I hear you. It just isn’t a problem the way we think it is and I know we’ll all come round to it in time.
I wish you god it had been done better too. Honestly.
And I’m not defending it at all.

Even when it happened it was the death of a completely empty character, that meant nothing. There was really nothing special about it.Ensign9 wrote:Snoke’s death is one of the most thrilling moments in any Star Wars film. I actually also think you now should see it in the context of the trilogy, and what you know know, not your initial idea in the cinema. This way it does have some meaning. It gets better that way.

Re: Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker
Having watched all three movies since last night, I’m more convinced than ever that TLJ is the real stinker of the trilogy. It has some highlights and good scenes, good cinematography as well. But there are so many bad parts that it really pulls the trilogy down with it.
TFA could have been better, but mostly did a good job of setting up new characters. TROS saved it in the end, with a fast action filled adventure, and lots of time for the key characters together.

I'm sure a lot was cut out. But JJ's always been very clear that the version you see is his version, is his cut. He's not even a big fan of releasing deleted scenes. Disney gave him carte blanche. I think JJ would have liked at least another year to work on pre-prod and the script. I also think of JJ as a “company man” type of director that isn’t going to make waves if he disagrees with the studio. That’s not always a bad thing but he was brought in because he could do the job quickly, efficiently, and with minimal controversy, not because he would have put out the best finished product in an artistic sense, necessarily.durdencommatyler wrote:I'm sure a lot was cut out. I don't know. They almost fired him on TFA because he didn't want to do certain things their way. The film was without doubt longer. Cinema times were blocked off for over 3hour 30 mins originally. This got cut back and back.
That’s Disney. Shorter run time more screenings more money
