Not in the slightest. I don't think he believes he's even making the best material possible. I think he's making the best material possible at the moment, under certain circumstances. FD's positioning on the album seems to suggest it is what it is.
I agree this is why i don't understand why it's held as a standard for the quality of Ed's writing at the moment.
Maybe it is the quality of Ed's writing at the moment, but that's OK. He's not saying it's his best writing ever, and he's not saying he won't do better again.

I guess I'm so used to saying 'he's done better', I'll take anything I can dig. I mean, I'm still clawing like a maniac for new PJ material, so if I'm satisfied at any level I'll take it.

Absolutely not. But, I do think he is the most inconsistent songwriters in the band. His highs and lows are so much more extreme than any other member.
This is a matter of taste plus he's the easiest target being the most prolific.
I can even agree with you that he's the most inconsistent in the band but i'm sure if i explain it further you wouldn't agree with me. For instance i really don't like NAIS because i find it pretentious without reason to be but then again i don't find any of Jeff's songs extremely good so in practice as far as my taste goes he's more consistent than Ed. Stone's songs are mediocre and generic most of the time so again consistent for me.
But this is just a reflection of my taste and I'm aware of that.

Cause by putting on an album he's choosing it to represent his songwriting at this moment. He must be somewhat proud if it. Why put it on the album otherwise. I'm sure there's an ed song on the albums that's awesome, BoB said he had the most songs on the album so I fucking hope so anyway. But I'll still wonder what he saw in this song that made it worth closing the album, other than it being a declaration of love for his wife.

While I totally empathise with your criticism, I think this needs to stop. There is absolutely nothing in the non-existent rulebook to say that 'a declaration of love for his wife' is by its very nature DOA. Just admit you think it's a rubbish song and be done with it. It's certainly more than a declaration of love for Ed's wife. It doesn't use her name. It doesn't use his name either. So for people who can relate to these lyrics, who don't hate the music, it's going to transcend Ed's personal context. And by being part of *this album* rather than another one, maybe it'll even transcend the romantic context in general.

You could make the same point about a number of songs from most of their albums.

With all the hating going on for Future Days, did anyone actually think it's somehow meant to be the centrepiece of the album? Personally, I don't mind the song at all and while PJ have produced songs that have been outright duds and put them on albums, FD isn't one of them. It's not a gem either. I can see myself caring for it just as much as I care for Around The Bend or Stupid Mop or Parting Ways. I only listen to those when I play the whole album. If FD is a closer to an album full of weighty songs, then it would be best viewed in that context. Not as a standalone. Let's at least wait to hear the album before we decide to massacre it.

Where is the unbridled rage for a line like that? People are just bored of PJ. That's OK, but let's not pretend that this song is any cooler.

For all I care Pearl Jam could write an album where every single song is a love song if I liked the music. My dislike for FD only stems from my boredom with the music.

I do hate it cause it sucks. It's not bad cause its a love song, I just think its a bad love song. I only mentioned it being a love song as I thought that might be the reason ed likes it/ finds it compelling/ wants to release it.

I prefer that to 'future days, days of you and me' and thin air is a better song musically and melodically IMO.

We can't really blame the band if we've chosen to spend and invest so muc time listening and supporting them. Little wonder a lot of us feel disappointed by the output and lack of, sometimes.
I think a lot of the hate is down to the prolonged wait. 4 years, and we get this??

I really don't think 'Our future days, days of you and me' is a great line. But I don't think it's any worse than the one about my baby in my arms. I think the context of Binaural makes it better. Binaural is a fucking great album so over time, people have forgiven lines like that.

It's one of 12 songs we haven't heard yet. And they've admitted they're in a creative lull and have other priorities. We all know that; so the album we'll have is what they've been able to produce in spite of it. We've been warned.

Are you serious? "Thin Air" and "Future Days" aren't anywhere near the same league.

We get a live performance of a new song which we know is on the album. But we've not heard the album yet. And we don't really know how the music on the song will be like in studio. But let's hate on it anyway because it's a love song. Or if not because of that, because the music is so uncool. But we haven't really heard the music of the studio version. Doesn't matter. Let's hate on it!
