I need more time with the album before I can say if it reflects its themes, but I am immediately struck by how it reflects Kanye, specifically at this point in his life/career: "The Life of Pablo" (Escobar/Picasso = him as an entrepreneur/empire-builder/artist) repeated, running together, overtaking the image, while an old image of family represents both his history and his family life now. I think it can be extrapolated to a more macro/social level as well (as all of his work can).

Streaming steadily since last night -- it's dense, intricate work, not easily parsed beyond first impressions at this point, though if I had to sum up that impression it would probably be "not immediately gripped, but compelled to keep listening." The production makes me think of Danger Mouse's work on the Gnarls Barkley albums -- deep soul samples, kind of fragmented and shrapnel-like, but unified through a lack of unity, if that makes sense, and tinged by a vague sense of darkness. So far this is the most compelling element of the music for me -- I continue to not care for Kanye's lyrics (though he remains ever capable of surprise), think his shortcomings as an emcee are as glaring as ever, and really think he's run out of ways to make Auto-Tune interesting. And it's hard to take too much offense to his quip about potential infidelity to his wife via a liason with T-Swift, as this remark was immediately followed by his claiming credit for T's fame -- clearly the man speaks in fictions.

Sources are indicating the version he played was incomplete both in terms of how many tracks were played and the versions of the tracks that were played.

I haven't heard the song, but saw the line posted on Twitter. Meh. It's stupid. Maybe it's offensive, but you're right, it can't be taken seriously. I just hate the use of the word 'bitch' so much. Blech. That's the only offensive part about it.

I really liked the bit of Wolves we've heard, and I thought parts of No More Parties was great, but thus far the stuff I've heard from this hasn't grabbed me the way the introductory tracks from MBDTF and Yeezus did. A while back in the thread Kevin Davis said the tracks sounded more like 'sketches', and I think that's kind of how I feel. And Kanye is just a master of priming the press and his audience. For as bad as the things he's saying about Cosby, Taylor Swift, etc. are, he's still all anyone is talking about.
