this bothers me because the song is so damn good, but the wasted opportunity at the end holds it back from being even better.
Funny but I like it this way better than if it had another one of those alll over the place solos
That little "pattern" is a perfect closer for me

i just feel like we should hear the main riff of the song during that part.. at wriglely, stone played it while mike mimicked it with the e-bow for a bar or two before he started noodling (which i can do with out). the pre-noodling part is what i'm expecting to hear. it's just not there.. there's some piano and faint guitars under eddie's vocal bits, and it just sounds a little empty to me. stone comes in with his "pattern" at the end which is fine, but.. i don't know.. to me, the outro is just missing some punch.

I think the outtro is so full on sound and emotion that another solo would be overkill

A little overdubbed ebow would've been nice over that outro lead part.

i'm not saying i want more of mike's noodling.. just immediately after the "..they won't die with you.. yea yea!" part.. let's hear the guitar riff. it's there, but it's completely buried. live, you actually hear a member of pearl jam playing it.. and then a another member of pearl jam plays along on the e-bow.
ah, i'll shut up now.

back to the lyrics.. it's hard to tell, but is there a chance he's saying:
and with no repair in sight, there is
no god with such might
as to open her world wide with subterfuge
i'm pretty sure i hear a "g" sound at the end of that line..

Thank you, harmless, but I really was asking about the meaning of the passage.
"She" must be tricked into thinking that there's a hope of fixing things?
That's depressing.

Sorry fella.
Yeah, I think it's pretty dark.

i've been of the belief that the "she" in this song is not a woman, but is nature it itself.
this passage seems to be more religion bashing.. religion (or god itself) is the ruse, and it offers no real ability to solve or explain the world's problems, only false promises and false hope.
nature is the all powerful force, not god or even man. and nature won't save you, much like god won't.
and then,
your death will soon arrive,
as she finally she decides
that all her problems, they won't die with you
nature will cast you aside because in the grand scheme of things, you just aren't that important.

I'm beginning to really like how the "Lightning Boooolt!" chorus falls against the background music. It's off-kilter, rhythmically, starting before the beginning of each bar. That sounded a mess at Wrigley because in typical fashion, Ed sung it out of time.

The studio version converted me.
I can't believe I was bashing it on Youtube and pretty much everywhere

The live version was pretty bad, no need to feel guilty about that.
