Jeez I hope it was understood that I was talking about Krusen and not that other guy.

Not punk rock at all. Not that they need a punk drummer, but a more versatile drummer would take them much further. Like Chamberlain, Freese or Perkins.
I wouldn't call any punk drummers "versatile"

I'm just not really a fan of Krusen's drumming.
Thank you!! All the boners for these boring fucking videos of him are leaving me mystified. Finally someone with some sense.
I'm pretty sure everyone on here knows that I'm grading drummers on a steep curve at this point

I think it's very evident that Krusen's playing is simple to a fault, but I can't get behind the idea that his playing is "stiff" after 20+ years watching Matt brace for impact with every hit; if anything, Krusen is the opposite, too polite and tentative

but, I do think he seems like a decent humble guy and I want that for Pearl Jam

Whoever it is, I’m just looking forward to less spritz with Matt out of the equation.

Unless they hire Josh Freese, who seems even spritzier.

Maybe Ed has gotten all the spritz out of his system and that’s the real reason Matt quit.

Man there are, like, zero drummers in this thread. I've clocked one or two of you being minimally respectful to the role, but goddamn, if you're saying Josh Klinghoffer, you should be permabanned. Klinghoffer is a musician, but not a drummer.

Matt Chamberlain is the obvious best choice, but even he is old at 59.

Josh Freese is a tour slut.

Dave Krusen missed a lot in his Drumeo video. Like a lot. It was fine, but not the caliber you'd expect from that channel.

Dave A is never coming back, please shut the fuck up, he's an asshole. And god he overplayed. The man's fills had fills.

Matt Cameron is the reason the band has gotten as good as it is. He saved their asses in 98. Go on, listen to that tour compared to 2024. They have grown so much thanks to him, and now that he's leaving, they will want to hire someone to carry them into their 60s. It will likely be someone like Matt Chamberlain if they're planning on one or two more records. It will be someone 10-15 years younger if they are planning to keep doing this a la the Rolling Stones.

Drums are hard.

I am not a drummer, but I've worked with a lot of drummers. I play drums, and would never call myself a drummer.

Drums are super hard.

Sorry, I meant a drummer who could also do that.

George Hurley might have a word with you about that... as well as Mario Rubalcaba. I could name a few more but the point remains.

This right here. Whoever they pick there will be an adjustment period—certain songs are going to line up with how we "expect" them to sound and others are going to sound very different.

Matt C. gets maligned for what he did to "Evenflow" and while I now prefer the slower tempo and groove of the original I have a distinct memory of listening to "Live on Two Legs" and hearing that version and preferring it for a very long time. The Ten version sounded kind of boring all of a sudden. I will miss Matt and wish he was sticking around but I enjoyed hearing what a new drummer was bringing to older songs and I'm kind of looking forward to that feeling again.

Matt may not be my favorite drummer for the Vitalogy and earlier material, but he’s what I expect to hear when I hear those songs.

Freese, Perkins, Chamberlin, Starkey, Smith & Krusen...
Any one of those guys can do the job.
Unfortunately, all of them will just feel predictable.
And predictable will not be a good look for a band that made a career out of being unpredictable.

If any of the above drummers are the pick - Then it'll be obvious that Pearl Jam will forevermore be nothing more than some greatest hits jukebox,
Big gulping from that golden punch bowl of nostalgia.
Joining that endless touring convoy of old farts clogging the road stop glory holes & cashing in on our collective longing for a time that's long behind us. A time that's been warped, embellished and stored in some dusty filing cabinet at the back of our minds.

However, If Pearl Jam pick someone unknown...
Well Then...The engine still turns
& thank fucking god
That engine still turns.

My money & my preference is on the next drummer being someone we don't know.
Please let it be someone we don't know.

You make a good point...

My biggest fear is the band becomes basically a "Ten" era+Daughter/Betterman/Last Kiss band. I would be flabbergasted if that actually happened and it's exceedingly unlikely but I still worry as there is a contingent of alleged PJ "fandom" that wants this and has wanted it for a while. Personally I'd be done with the band at that point.

To me this situation is either because
a. The band wants to play longer shows and MC didn't
b. The bank wants to play more shows and MC didn't
c. The band wanted to adopt a more rhcp, RS style predictable setlist chauk full of pre MC songs at every show.

I very much hope it's bc of a. and/or b.

Here's a younger Seattle drummer. He's playing as a drummer for Matt Cameron in that Wipers tribute band. Seems like he also auditioned for Primus and is probably ambitious:
