I had a cocky surgeon that pushed me into surgery for that shit. Sure, it took care of the problem and was running again within 4 weeks but I ended up with major patalea syndrome. Worst ever. IT band can be really brutal but it is very very treatable with proper stretching, strengthening and arch support.
I did rehab on it for about 5 months before i got tired of not being able to ski and run etc.... so my surgeon jumped on that and pushed me into surgery. I have learned so much since then and I would have done it way differently.
I knew you'd comment on that.
It helped for me for a bit. I dont use custom orthotics anymore though.....but it helped to re-build my legs when i was dealing with patella issues. THAT was painful
I don't want to get into another minimalist rant. If you think it helped you, I'm happy for you. But changing your biomechanics (which is what most cushioned running shoes do) with your footwear is a horrific idea.
guys, i appreciate the input and the link. ill look into it in the morning when im more fucking alert. one side note or thing to add off the top of my head, i noticed that proper stretching before and after helped a significant amount. that was after my niece the college athlete yelled at me.

i get this often. to where running daily or a few times a week is out of the question. its fine during, and even afterwards. but the next day is a different fucking story.
any ideas?
It could be Iliotibial band syndrome, which can be treated. I have friends that say a compression wrap and a foam roller before and after exercising works wonders.

i think the IT band pain is usually higher, at or above the outer knee right? The pain i have is slightly below the knee.
Not really. The IT band runs along the outside of the knee and connects just below it. But the pain from Iliotibial band syndrome can also radiate to other parts of the knee.
Get it checked out. IT band syndrome is always my first guess when it comes to knee issues and with some stretching, a foam roller and a compression wrap, it could be easy to manage.

I wouldnt do it again but it helped at the time. And some cortisone shots! Hopefully i wont be paying too much for that in the years to come :\. Keep in mind, i wasn't just running, I was also playing hockey and skiing....different footwear and mechanics involved too.
Kinda crazy how big ultrarunning is now. The Transvulcania Ultramarathon was this past weekend and Kilian Jornet won (and set a new course record) after a disappointing 3rd place finish last year. This race is run on the volcanic summits of La Palma in the Canary islands. I still hope to run a European ultra some day.
Picked up my materials for the Brooklyn Half this Saturday. I'm a little nervous, actually. I've run 13 miles dozens of times, but this is my first "competitive" Half Marathon. I'm not trying to win anything, just perform well and finish. I'm actually starting further back so I can run with my wife. She's in the second wave of runners.
Should be a blast. At least there's beer, hot dogs, and Coney Island at the end of the thing.
I ended up buying another pair of Sketchers GoRuns for $70. I know my "hardcore" running friends will laugh, but these are as good as any New Balance or Brooks I have ever trained in. Snicker away as I blast by you.

They kinda look like traditional running shoes, but they have minimalist cred. About 7 ounces, 4mm heel-to-toe drop and they are basically seamless, so I'll be sockless.
I suck at running. Luckily I'm awesome at pedaling.
I've been hitting my dumbbells(20lbs each.) and barbell(35lbs each side) pretty hard the past month. I started to feel an increase in strength after a few days but now it's starting to pay off with definition.
Really though I should get out and jog run more. My heel is almost all better and it would really round out my workouts.
Kudos to you guys that run. I haven't been posting much but I've been lurking those of you posting in this thread have inspired me a little.
Hit the treadmill and just cruised. No sprint finish. Planks and push-ups afterward. New shoes felt great. Hitting the TV towers again on Saturday. Tired as fuck.
Today I worked a 9 hour shift. Sweated alot. Ate very little. I had to have burned up some calories. Afterward I pedaled about two miles and met up with a few friends for 2 hours of basketball. Pedaled home and pounded the free weights for a while.
Oh yeah my Bball friends are all early 20s and in shape. And they play lots of ball. I still won the 2nd of 3 games. I felt pretty good being 32 and white.
Brooklyn Half went really well. Much better than I expected. I said I'd be happy with a 10:15 pace, but that I really hoped to do 10. I ended up with a 9:20 pace!
Felt great. Pizza and beer after. Now I'm gonna fucking nap.
