I don’t pay attention to his lyrics; should I? I liked this discussing about them.

tragabigzanda wrote:Sorry daft, I’m not sure how familiar you are with Kendrick? My short answer is that his entire oeuvre is filled with — maybe even defined by — the paradoxes of his experience. For every misogynistic lyric, there’s another lyric about his commitment to certain women in his life; his struggles with fidelity; the weight and desire to be a model for his community in direct conflict with his baser desires, the cyclical nature of his own generational trauma, etc.

Probably more than any other rapper I’m familiar with, I’d caution against taking any single lyric, or lyrical motif, and using it to make assumptions about the guy, or his impact on society. I think he’s nothing if not a deeply complex, layered person; one who’s done an amazing job of putting that complexity to music, and marketing his psyche as an extension thereof.
All of this. Excellent response.

I'd add that art reflects life, even the parts we aren't comfortable with. Mad Men is a deeply misogynistic show but it's also my favorite show of all time. It's not just the content, it's the context. What are we discussing? What's the larger conversation being had.

It's also helpful to remember that Kendrick's culture isn't yours or mine. Dismissing his perspective and his complexity and his reflection on his experience because it isn't ours feels just as icky.

In fact, I believe the initial impetus for the "___ is better than Soundgarden" thing was the prevalence of Soundgarden-related threads in OB at the time

There can never be too many Soundgarden threads.

I totally read this as your colleague used to be Kendrick's teacher, and after you took over the class you dropped him from the IB program
Amazing.
Kendrick is on the prescribed reading list. I just chose to axe my buddy’s entire curriculum and make my own focusing almost entirely on female authors since I never had a chance to teach them before outside of Harper Lee and an occasional short story or Dickinson poem.

Trag hates Pitchfork unless a review agrees with him.

I understand why some are left feeling like: "Hey, where's the cream filling?"

-GNX is not a dense concept album ala GK-MC, 2PAB or Mr. Morale.
-GNX includes a Heart series track (and no previous studio album has one).
-Other observations have been making the rounds but sound too stretching for me.

I get the logic behind all the expectation. But to my ears, GNX is 44 minutes of no skip tracks.
No decoding needed, no skits, no dialogues.
I'm perfectly happy if all we get is GNX.

Yeah my reasons are basically the lack of concept and the inclusion of Heart pt. 6. I'm enjoying this one a lot, too.
