If 8 and 9 are quality movies it will elevate people's take on this film as the beginning stage of a classic journey.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Give it a few years.darth_vedder wrote:So the majority really feel this feel is "as good as" Empire?
Same as the OT, empire is great, but it is enhanced by the memorable beginning and satisfying conclusion of the arc.

It means that there is a certain quality threshold that needed to be crossed to hang with those first three movies, but is not making a judgement about where it falls in.darth_vedder wrote:So you're saying those people who voted that way think it's "as good as" the originals, yeah? That's the thing. I think people are probably voting this way based on their hopes for finishing out the trilogy in a great way.stip wrote:If 8 and 9 are quality movies it will elevate people's take on this film as the beginning stage of a classic journey.LoathedVermin72 wrote:Give it a few years.darth_vedder wrote:So the majority really feel this feel is "as good as" Empire?

But, comparing them as standalone movies, its really hard to see how they compare at all.

Sure, but that cuts both ways. Surely you agree that each of the OT films are enhanced by the presence of the other films and the story that unites them. Empire, for instance is able to build off the tremendous reservoir of good will created by a new hope, and the Luke/Vader arc is extra satisfying because we like how it endsEJ wrote:That's the thing. I guess we'll agree to disagree. I don't know how folks can think this is "as good as" the originals. If the question were phrased differently, like "do you have hope that the new trilogy will be as good as the originals after seeing TFA" than I could see your point. But the way it's worded, it appears the majority think it's "as good as" Empire, to which I still

And as stand alone movies there are many flaws in the OT as well. We ignore them because we cease to notice after all these years or we have enough good will towards the franchise that we don't careEJ wrote:That's the thing. How much of that thinking is about us not allowing something in to be as good or better than something we've treasured since childhood?
i'm more than happy for these new films to just be at least as good as the OT..will they be better? and if they were would we have clarity or honesty enough to say so? i probably wouldnt.
But as it stands i'm just happy we get more star wars and the force awakens right now is as good for me as the OT.
excited for what Johnson is gonna do with it, TERRIFIED about the last guy and hope JJ steps in to direct instead.

The original trilogy is an entity that exists beyond its parts.
Imagine each movie gets a score from 1-100. For example:
A new hope - 90
Empire - 95
Jedi - 85
Phantom menace - 40
Clones - 50
Sith. - 60
The OT has a quality score of 90. The prequels have a score of 50. Let's say I give the new movie a 90. That puts it in the quality range of the OT, better than its lies and not as good as its highs.
And I do think it makes sense to think of the OT as an entity that exists beyond each of its component parts

Sure, and that help explain why they took root, but they aren't original anymore. They are just first.

Which I may saw once, and on an iPad, so hardly ideal. The dino fights were fine , but the story was utter nonsense and the characters were totally uninteresting.
Did he write that movie, or just direct it?

I don't think I am either, but the SW forums ive seen at least, there hasnt even been one poster supporting him, its weirdly unanimous that it's an awful idea to have him direct the last one, and that has style will jar utterly with whatever Johnson gives us(presumably a dark heavy story)

Did he write the movie? I haven't seen it, probably won't. But, at this point, what could they really do with the Jurassic template other than making them wreak havoc like Godzilla?stip wrote:Which I may saw once, and on an iPad, so hardly ideal. It's as if this movie's supporters don't care about aesthetics whatsoever. It's all just story and characters to them.
Which, I guess, makes sense.
