His handling of his female characters makes him an odd choice for a movie with a female lead

She'll probably have to be saved by Finn, who will immediately impregnate her and get her fixed up with some make-up and high heels.stip wrote:His handling of his female characters makes him an odd choice for a movie with a female lead

The people were so thinly drawn it was hard to work up any outrage. Perhaps if I saw it again. I barely recall the sceneMcParadigm wrote:Whatever love of humanity I had left fell out the bottom the day I sat and listened to a group of six try and convince me that that scene was incredibly funny, was meant to be funny, and that they loved it.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That was probably the worst moment for me. Absolutely. I think Trevorrow definitely intended that scene to be funny/amusing, which made it so much more appalling.McParadigm wrote:Whatever love of humanity I had left fell out the bottom the day I sat and listened to a group of six try and convince me that that scene was incredibly funny, was meant to be funny, and that they loved it.LoathedVermin72 wrote:That was probably the worst moment for me. Re: Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
I think Trevorrow subscribes to the contemporary "It's just a monster movie! The characters don't matter!" mentality. He lays it out in that cynical "audiences want bigger, cooler" scene, which, ironically, makes this a self-fulfilling prophecy, and essentially turns Trevorrow into his own villain. God, what a hypocritical disaster this movie is.stip wrote:The people were so thinly drawn it was hard to work up any outrage. Perhaps if I saw it again. And as a Mary Sue character, she will be immediately great at that as well.LoathedVermin72 wrote:She'll probably have to be saved by Finn, who will immediately impregnate her and get her fixed up with some make-up and high heels.stip wrote:His handling of his female characters makes him an odd choice for a movie with a female lead

Re: Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens (2015)
Again, see the movie so that your perception and characterization is not 90% informed by prescreened opinions confirming what you so desperately want this to be (the Star Wars equivalent of lightning bolt) but that Mary Sue stuff is silly
A: she is a Jedi in training - they're all like that. No more than anakin or obi wan
B: she is emotionally complex and engaging with a meaningful arc. She is not a wish fulfillment character
C: when we start complaining about overpowered male characters in movies (such as Luke or batman or superman or captain America or iron man or James Bond or Ethan hunt) I'll start to care that, God forbid, there is a supremely talented female character helming a franchise.

I don't really have a problem with Rey being a "Mary Sue," (the whole concept of that seems kind of silly, since tons of characters across all kinds of fiction are this) but this movie is definitely the SW equivalent of Lightning Bolt.
Except LB is a lot better.
