The Argonaut wrote:Digging for Fire is wonderful, just a beautiful movie. Joe Swanberg is really something special. Happy Christmas and this one are just tops, and Drinking Buddies was good too. I've only seen one of his pre-Drinking-Buddies movies. I've got to dig into his catalogue more.
Well i have a problem with those two...Diggin for fire...i mean i didnt even understand what was that about. Really.
Happy Christmas was so...obvious. I get it Joe, you like to improvise but...still, cmon.

I think I watched the first 10 minutes of Happy Christmas. I'm having trouble even remembering that much.

I used to loved that kind of movie...but Swanberg seems to be in a really lazy mode with those two. I mean, I like Drinking Buddies and his previous movies, and the way he makes them is cool...But these two? whats to like in Happy Christmas?

the humanity. Those two films contain some of the purest and realest love I've ever seen on screen.

It's not a subpar movie. It's not as good a film as Drinking Buddies, but it's not subpar either. That's the same kind of logic that has me claiming everything is "great" or "the living worst." It's a fallacy.
You don't have to bash or disparage one at the expense of the other.
Happy Christmas is a wonderful story full of fantastic performances. Ann Kendrick, Melanie Lynskey (who is a grossly underrated actress) and Lena Duhnam are all outstanding in the film. Such great performances. Such honesty. Such lovely, no-nonsense film work. It's like a play on film. Which, I understand, could and probably would totally turn off LV.
But it's a really well made film, even if it isn't as good as Drinking Buddies.

I agree with you with the idea of ¨great¨or ¨the worst¨. Thats why i called it just ¨subpar¨.
Dont agree with your views of the performances at all...i mean Lena Duhnam is capable of so much more that this. I give her that her character is basically non existent. The same with Kendrick. And i adore Lynskey, but again...she is such a boring cliché thats kinda painful to watch.

Yeah, I'm just gonna have to agree to disagree with you here. Especially Kendrick, whose performance is a bullseye. And Lynskey who, again, has so much to offer and really makes the most of her opportunities in Happy Christmas.
