I really hate the vocal layering/effects on this.
Everything else is an improvement from the live version.

It's a bit much but I don't hate it. The warbly laser thing is far more pointless, it's like a few seconds of Austin Powers appearing twice in the song

And what does he say? "Grooovy, baby!!"
So I'm fine with that.

Lightning Bolt has ample amounts of what I was fearing this record would have.... Brendan O'Brien's cheez whizardry slinging twinkles, warbles and all sorts of other shit that isn't part of the actual band that will then be performing this song live for hopefully ages. So far, this is the song I find most impregnated with BoB's dreadful heavy hand and his attempts to be Pearl Jam's missing band member.

Fuck, I hate what I perceive he's done to this song. The only saving grace is that I don't think it would have been a favorite song of mine, but I sure would have liked it more without all the extra nonsense.

I can all but see him sitting in the studio going, "I just heard this sound effect on Dr. Who that I think we could add to this song to REALLY make it sizzle, boys!"

After listening a couple more times, I'd agree. That also makes sense with the following line as well.

On the brighter side, that second lower guitar riff on the chorus is totally crucial to it, and was utterly absent from the live version.

I love all the percussion smashing on the outro of this. Big dustbin-like type toms, and a china cymbal on every snare hit.

for what it's worth, I love the feeling of those effects--they give the song a revelatory/millennial feel it might not have had with just a guitar. but they aren't so critical to the song that they can't be replaced, in a live setting, with some nice guitar interplay since the crowd can supply the energy that the studio effects are providing.

I can't wait to hear the ending on a crisp sounding recording.

I actually am having trouble listening to the other songs because that's time that could be spent listening to lightning bolt.

Caveat: I've been very critical of the stuff Brendan O'Brien is adding to the songs lately.

BUT... he always did it. On past records, he adds other "non-band" elements. He plays as a "sixth member" every now and then. He just does it with more subtlety.

Personally, I quite enjoy the sickly irony that some of these songs bash religion whilst having the shine of Christian worship music. Satire? I doubt it, it's probably just BO'B, but it still works.

I'll go out on the limb and say that the piano part during "always something never nothing" is clever and appropriate.

Now shoot.

Nope, the piano is indeed a nice element this time.

How am I supposed to hate you when you've been agreeing with everything I said for the last two days?

how come we're not talking about how great the guitar solo is after the first verse/chorus?
