It just feels like a dull song — somewhat musically blank, yet somehow still cumbersome and overworked (especially the chorus — Eddie really puts a whole bunch of nothing through the meat grinder in that chorus). Like “Amongst the Waves” and “Unthought Known,” it is emblematic of a late-era tendency of Eddie’s to amplify melodies that feel awkward and half-formed into these big climactic moments that only underline how catchy the songs aren’t. Sad to say I feel a little bit of that in “Won’t Tell” too — not to the same degree, but still in the sense of wishing this big emphatic melody felt more internally logical and naturally satisfying.

“Gone” has occasionally been performed really well live, with Eddie getting to the heart of something in the verses that the relatively sterile studio take and demo never quite find. As live PJ sometimes does, those versions take on an atmosphere that can downplay the shortcomings of the composition. There are a few in 2006 that feel this way, and I felt this way when I saw it in Moline in 2014. In that sense, I find it a hard song to say I dislike. But I get why people hold it in relatively low esteem.

I was sure we had a board wide agreement never to talk about this album ever again.

I feel Gone didnt have that much stuff going on to be a great song. I did liked a lot the reworked band version and can understand why they choose to include it on the album. Its catchy yes and uplifting.

But it turned out one of those songs i dont care or listen much but every time it appears i do like it now.

Are you nuts? It is one of the best things they've ever done. You must be thinking about Backspacer.

They haven’t played anything off ST almost since the tour for it.

Work from there.

Every day on the bus back from the city, I would listen to that album, and Gone came up exactly when the bus traveling up in New Jersey would hit the place where the New York City skyline would slowly come out of view, and it seemed to fit the song really well. I can still see the disappearing skyline when I hear that song.

My recollection was people hated the “This American Dream I’m disbelieving” line, as well as the clear ode to the Who with the “if nothing is everything I will have it all”. I enjoy it all and always have. Sorry folks.
yep!

i really like the version of Gone that's just EV with cameron on back up vocals. i wonder if eddie and josh could turn this into something interesting with just the two of them. it's a good song but would work better w/o a full band.

'severed hand' should be a live staple. it's still one of the most exciting thing's they've done.

Love this album, but Gone is just a weak song.

I also sometimes forget that Army Reserve exists.

yeah, i really like the whole ¨im gone so long¨vibe and it fits really well with so many Ed´s songs with this theme, rvm being the most obvious one.

I like Gone a lot, but was very disappointed to read that in the chorus he is saying "This time I'm letting go of it all" and not "this time IIIIIIIII AAAAAM gooohohhhayyyhawwwwwwn" (seriously listen and you will hear it XD)

I actually really loved the way I thought he was singing the chorus but no he is just saying something completely different lol

It's a good song though, I dunno why people dont like it.

I’ve still never heard it. Would you recommend it?
I never had a problem with Brendan O'Brien until I listened to this mix today. Now I do. He de-guitarred what was supposed to be a guitar record. I hate to say it, but Eddie and Matt are 100% not the most listenable parts of this band.

Have any of the usual RMers done a live compilation of this album? if so, could someone please point me in the right direction?

I want to love this album, it’s nearly 20 years later and there is something I cannot grasp with it. It’s the loudness for sure but the Bob remix didn’t fix that either. It’s disjointed in some way, like WWS and Comeback, the snare is too high and just off by a fraction. It’s like they had to record the drums a certain way for the hard hitting songs but then applied it across the board. Ed’ vocal affectations are all over the place too. Blasted Gigaton from start to finish yesterday and it was so refreshing that it had a vibe that is missing from Avocado.
