I got the BBC box set for Christmas and have been binging. I wish the audio on a couple of the broadcasts was better, but overall it's a fantastic set. The 1995 Monster Tour show is dynamite -- every song reimagined as an overdriven distortion machine.

I'll have to check this out once I'm done catching up on and revisiting everything else.

Re: How The West Was Won And Where It Got Us: An REM Thread
I already adore Monster and Hi-Fi. But I'm really looking forward to hearing Scott and Scott talk about those records. Mostly because I'm curious to see how Scott Aukerman reacts to them. And also I want to see if Adam Scott ever says anything negative about REM. Hi-Fi is easily, far and away, my favorite REM album and I'm less into the early stuff. I wonder how someone who adores the early stuff feels about those two records.

Love them both, but I think Hi-Fi is a bit overrated.

The dichotomy with this record is a fucking puzzle to me. On the one hand I totally agree with you. But on the other hand.... everyone says that, so can it be?cutuphalfdead wrote:Love them both, but I think Hi-Fi is a bit overrated.

I don't say that! "Hi-Fi" is my favorite REM by a considerable margin.durdencommatyler wrote:The dichotomy with this record is a fucking puzzle to me. On the one hand I totally agree with you. I'm always happy to be on any team that includes Kevin Effing Davis.

I don't call it Monster anymore. It's The Scary One.

It's in my #2 spot right now. We'll see if it stays there after the pod/relisten.cutuphalfdead wrote:Monster might be my favorite at this point.

I won't spoil it but I will say I was surprised at how Adam and Scott felt about The Scary One.

I am really interested in the Monster reissue. Bet the demos and outtakes are cool.

1. LRP
2. Automatic
3. The Scary One
4. Hi Fi
5. Accelerate
6. Collapse Into Now
After 6 is where there is a the drop off for me. A lot of great great songs but not an album as a whole that I can easily digest and be satiated by.
