But does he shine like a sunbeam? Because I just have no time left in my life for anyone who doesn't shine like a sunbeam.

It's a good album, very good even, but I played it into the ground and it now reminds me aggressively of high school, which isn't my favorite stretch of memory lane to stroll down. By the Way scratches all the same itches for me, in my opinion is an overall stronger collection of songs and better-produced/arranged record, and generally resides in a warmer place in my heart. So I don't revisit Californication much, even though looking at the tracklist there are a lot of cuts I wouldn't mind hearing right now ("Easily," "Porcelain," "This Velvet Glove," "Emit Remmus"), alongside a handful of others I've probably heard enough for a lifetime (i.e. all the singles).

I listened to By the Way so much during the summer of 2002 that I at one point would have called it one of my top ten albums of all time; it was a classic "summer jam" album for me and my friends (sorry, couldn't resist) that year, just one of those things that was always on, that everybody really loved hearing, etc., soundtracking all these big moments, playing in the car on the way to and from all these great, stupid adventures. I had no interest in Stadium Arcadium -- I was into other things, and the singles didn't really stir up any enthusiasm -- and haven't really dug anything I've heard since. Haven't heard the new one yet.

I've got nothing to add except to say that you brought up Emit Remmus and that's a beast of a song.
I guess I will also add that, in 2006, I was salivating in anticipation of an album called Self Titled by a little band called Pearl Jam while the aforementioned roommate was going nuts waiting for Stadium Arcadium, so I bet even if I had been familiar with By The Way, my PJ fandom would have overridden the excitement.

I like that the production seems less polished than a lot of their recent material
