Hollywood is an industry. Of course they want money. Star Wars is multi-BILLION dollar franchise. Disney didn't buy it Lucas because they give a shit about art.

The merchandising of Star Wars was a brilliant move. I'm not gonna throw shit at Lucas for figuring out how to maximize his income and exploit the market. Good on him. It's part of what makes him a genius.

But I also think this notion that Star Wars films exist solely to sell toys is a little ridiculous. That's a narrow and cynical point of view.
