Sade - Diamond Life
Did you ever get into Soldier or Love?
I like parts of those others but love Diamond Life front to back.
I am however biased. Back in January 1985 I was 14 going on 15 and going into year 10 at school. I had caught the bus into town to pick up my booklist and on the way home the dragon on the cover of this weird little book The Hobbit caught my attention, so I started reading it. I finished it within 2 days or something and told my older brother about this great book I'd read. He looked at me as if I was a bit of an idiot and went to his room and came out with the 3 LoTRs books and threw them at me. So with one week to go before school started I began reading them and for that week I pretty much did nothing else at all but read. I always liked to have music on in the background of whatever I was doing (still do) but I was so engrossed in the books that I didn't have time to pick and choose selections as I went, and to be honest it was all just background noise regardless, so I pretty much flipped the sides on the same 90 minute TDK tape whilst reading through all 3 LoTR books over that week. I didn't sleep much.
Sade's Diamond Life was on one side of the tape, David Bowie's Love You Till Tuesday on the other. I never got sick of them and they became part of me somehow. But I don't ever listen to the Bowie album anymore, but I certainly do Sade.

We have very different tastes in music.
Granted, every year I find more music that I enjoyed in the 80s, but to my ears it is still the ugly duckling compared to the 60s, 70s, 90s, and possibly beyond.
Man if someone said “you can only listen to music from one decade,” I’d pick 80s without a moment’s hesitation:
From Ragged Glory to Paul’s Boutique, from Daydream Nation to The Kick Inside, the diversity of artists making fresh music across genres is just astounding
I thought Ragged Glory was 1990. It’s not as if the 80s were bad, but a decade of transition. It’s often hard for me to fully get all the synthetic sounds that we’re getting excessive in 80s. And of course the power ballad hair rock that had its moment isn’t my thing really.

Agreed. Though Neil had that whole weird phase in the 80s. Wasn’t Reactor also in the early 80s. Love that album.

The only people who really hate the 80s are gen xers stuck in the 90s. Both were great decades for music in different ways

I wouldn’t say I hate the 80s. Tons of great music, though the bands I would generally run to had rough stretches in there.
What I didn’t like in the 80s was really the ridiculous hair metal that sits somewhere in the realm of Poison, Warrant, etc., and Bon Jovi is one of those bands I actively despise. That whole phase of rock music that was albums full of nonsense rock songs about girls with an obligatory one or two power ballads ruined the 80s credibility.
That said, R.E.M., U2, Sonic Youth, and a large host of other bands had great music in that decade. We’ve covered the great albums Neil Young released. Bruce had his greatest commercial success, Prince, Michael Jackson before things went south. Dylan had Infidels and those late decade albums. Tom Petty. The list is very long. And look - the 90s is also quite a mixed bag as well. But the 80s are still likely my least favorite of the decades of rock music from the 60s until now. That doesn’t mean it was bad by any stretch.

70's rock basically was the worst thing ever except for Neil Young

i like how one sentence is just "Tom Petty." and its an incredibly strong argument, just the guys name lol. 80s are by far my least favorite, but someone has to be last.
