True. That's also one of the things that are bugging me about Pearl Jam. They may start a song sometimes with an interesting chord progression but suddenly switch to something entirely different instead of building a melody around those chords. Take Severed Hand for example. There are a few others as well.
GSMF, MYM
At least in GSMF that progression returns later on (the end jam I think?), but MYM for sure. That bugs the hell out of me too.
It's not amazingly bad. If the previous song and the next song have colourful intros as well, it'll just add to the ear candy. And that riff is repeated during the 'Go to heaven, that's swell' part -- just on the higher guitar, over the top.

yarp... I'd probably like Severed Hand a lot more if it wasn't for the intro. the intro builds and builds then the rest of the song is a let down till the bridge imo

but yeah severed hand was exactly the kind of thing I was thinking of

Yes! I remember the first time I heard Severed Hand and thought at the begining..."This is going to be epic!" And then the whole thing changed! lol I still love the song but damn...what could have been.
I think that intro music was on the EPK they released, too, so I was thinking the same thing for weeks before the disc showed up in my mailbox. Quite a letdown.

GSMF, MYM
I love MYM that way, plus Mike incorporates the intro into the song near the end

It helps that they drop a hint of the intro back in the end

I guess the only thing that'd improve that ending for me would be if Matt went back to that off-kilter rhythm for the last couple of bars.

Might have, yeah. I guess dropping into it for even two beats of a bar, as if he'd dropped the rhythm and then picked it up again, would've been cool. But he doesn't usually do anything like that, so...

EPK?
Electronic Press Kit. Usually a short video of the band talking about the songs, with footage of them performing the songs. Often shot in an annoyingly grainy and vintage filter.

We've had them for ST and Backspacer and the one for LB has been shown at the listening parties in Europe.

I keep waiting for Matt to drop into a backbeat-tastic dnb rhythm with dropped beats and pauses everywhere. Still hasn't happened.
