I've not watched A New Hope in forever so I've thrown it on. Man, its fairly boring for the first 20 mins until Obi-Wan turns up.

Alec Guiness immediately elevates the whole show

His brief explanation to Luke about the Force and how Vader turned to the dark side is short, succinct, and feels full of depth and history despite lasting about 15 seconds. Its beautiful.

I haven't even seen the movie, and as soon as I read that line in a review I knew what that was.

JJ loves to put his own words and jokes into the mouths of characters. It always feels "outside" the story, which is detrimental to how clever he thinks he's being, and historically it sucks.

See also: "just blow it up. There's always a way to blow it up."

I definitely read it as a (not so subtle) shot. I like the just blow it up line in the context of the film. It is a nice cocksure moment from a guy why has done it before (twice). There's the meta humor aspect as well, which I don't usually go in for, but it works here

This whole movie is a desperate attempt to "restore" the franchise from a generalized perception of "disgrace." And as McP noted, this isn't new for Abrams. It's not that much of a stretch.

By all accounts it seems to have been a phenomenally successful effort, and while this may have been many things, at no point did it reek of desperation.

In A New Hope, Vader and company are using an actual mind probe to try and extract information from Leia? So why isn't Vader just using his power to get the info the way Kylo Ren does in TFA?

Yeah, I've never really delved into the whole extended universe thing. But now that they've basically wiped the slate clean and all those old books are basically fan fiction, I might try to keep on top of the new extended universe. I'm told the new canon books are hit/miss, though.

I thought the Force was the Force? I'm not sure I buy that someone like Vader didn't have it in him to extract info with his mind. He can choke someone without touching them, but can't read minds. No deal.

Yeah, I have no problem with that for the most part. I just thought that someone as powerful as Vader would've had that in his arsenal.
