Salty is an awful catcher, I'd rather have Swihart learn on the fly than bring him back.

I know all the defensive metrics suggest Hanley is historically bad, but I don't feel like he's been THAT bad in the field. I know he's been bad and fucked up plays, but I just haven't thought it was such a major factor in why they are losing games.

Hanley fit a need in so much as he was a right handed power bat who could hit cleanup (or third), but we really didn't have a place on the field for him...but there was no need to pay Sandoval what we did, especially when we could've probably traded for Donaldson or found a one year stopgap and not suffered much if any decline from what we've gotten out of that position since Lowell's better years
so why not spend that money on lester and keep cespedes? I'm fine with the move to get sandoval. I still think craig and kelly can be productive members of this team, and I'm really unsure why they didn't bring salty back for pennies on the dollar after hanigan and vasquez got hurt. If clubhouse is important, why peirzinski (sp?) a year ago and Hanley this year?

you're preaching to the choir on that first part E...but Salty sucks ass, always did, always will...they should've had a better replacement plan in place for him, but I'm not sad they didn't give him some ridiculous contract like Miami did

I'm not saying they should have paid him what Miami did, I'm saying this year, when he was released and free to sign anywhere for the minimum he should have been brought in. That way Swihart wouldn't have to be rushed like JBJ, Boegarts, and others.

On not re-signig Salty: I liked the idea of not rushing Vasquez to the majors and pairing Ross with somebody for a season, but Peirzynski seemed like the absolute worst of the options available that year.

I don't think even Farrell is that dense, if anyone is going to lose his spot for Masterson to get a chance, it'll be Kelly

Farrell/Cherington ARE that dense, but hopefully the current climate prevents them from making a move like that.

It looks like Cherington made an awful trade today for De Aza. I've never heard of the kid they gave up for him before today, but it sounds like they traded a kid that projects as a major league reliever for someone that just got DFA'd.

De Aza is pretty good, and given how completely useless Boston's outfield has been this year, he should help... which is weird to say now, considering how deep their outfield looked heading into the season.

He just got DFA'd and the Red Sox, due to their record, would have one of the first chances to claim him off waivers. Am I right about that?

I think so... if he were put on waivers today, it goes worst-to-first through the AL, then worst-to-first through the NL. So the Sox would have second dibs after Oakland, who could really use an OF right now. There's also a realistic chance that other teams were willing to trade for him too, so this was the only way to actually get him.

I would have just taken the chance and see if he was available on waivers. Obviously other people had to be interested because they also are paying about 1/3 of his remaining money. I just don't think De Aza nearly justifies what they gave up here. Especially when you have Victorino on the DL and Craig in AAA(I know De Aza batting from the left side is his appeal, but still.)

This team has fallen below rock bottom. At this point, whether it's even justified or not, canning Farrell is the only move left to make.
