I’m aware of tomato sauce being called gravy, but not Sunday gravy.

Re: Which restaurant have you been to recently?
I took the family for an early lunch at Pier 6 in San Leon yesterday.
San Leon is a small fishing community on a peninsula in Galveston Bay, halfway between Houston and Galveston. I've driven there many times when I've wanted to clear my mind. I'd go there to look at shrimp boats, grab a beer at a divey ice house, eat a few oysters, and just escape for a while. The economy in that town is based on nothing but oysters and meth. The arrival of a James Beard nominated oyster house is anathema to everything I love about this shanty town.
I wanted to hate the place but I had a great time. We shared some grilled and raw oysters, tomato salad, a bowl of seafood bisque, some crawfish empanadas. They had a kid's menu too, which surprised me. Felt good to see other families there. The building itself was full of windows facing the bay and the prices were reasonable. I was worried a place like this would price out the community but having tried it, I understand now that every part of the experience was designed to highlight the underrated Galveston Bay views and fishing. I think a place like this will give a town like San Leon a little bit more of a reason to exist on the map outside of fishing exports. I wonder if the line cooks are commuting from Houston and Galveston or if they're locals.

Getting away to San Antonio for a couple of days next week for my wife's birthday. This place looked right up our alley so I made reservations. The charcuterie and starters menu makes it feel like the kind of place where you could spend a few hours just taking it all in.

Re: Which restaurant have you been to recently?
We celebrated a great friend's 60th birthday last night at Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare.
One of the best dining experiences I've ever had in my entire life. There was one dish that literally brought tears to my eyes. I've never had that kind of thing happen before. We also went ahead and did the wine pairing, too. And some of those wines were transcendent. I can't believe how incredible the meal was.
I haven't done the fine dining thing in a long, long time. This was a perfect return. Maybe my favorite thing about the overall experience is that we had two kid with us (both under 17) who had never had a tasting menu experience at a fancy place before. Watching them tackle food that they didn't know was so fucking cool. They each ate everything and had some really insightful, fun and poetic things to say. After one dish, Luka said, "It's like eating the best bedtime story."
