It's super dark and fucked up. I love it! I'm a big fan of the play it's based on, too. I read it in college and ended up doing a small paper on it for my Dramatic Structure class (which is sort of ironic given that Buchner died before finishing it).
yeah, i love how dark it is....im listening to Swordfishtrombones now. Its a good mix between the early years and the modern sound from him i think.
Yeah man! That's a great record. I think it's my favorite of that particular Waits era/run. I know Rain Dogs is sort of unfuckwithable for most people. And rightly so. But I like Swordfishtrombones more, honestly. Not that one can go wrong with either of them.
Side B of Swordfishtrombones is untouchable.

It's top tier, Waits. I put it in a close second right behind Bone Machine. It was my favorite of his records for a long time. I'd also put it on my all time favorite albums (by any artist) list. It's gorgeous and theatrical and totally my jam.

It is my second favorite TW album. Some days it is number 1

Rain Dogs
Blood Money
Bone Machine

then it gets harder to rank

She took all my money and my best friend. You know the story, here it comes again:

I love this performance of this song. The whole Real Gone album and tour was just stupendous

Blood money is top tier for me.

Though not enough mike variations talk around here. That’s maybe my favorite all times album.

FWIW:

Bone Machine
Blood Money
Mule Variations
Real Gone
Swordfishtrombones

Rain Dogs
Bone Machine
Mule Variations
Blood Money
Real Gone
Swordfishtrombones
Alice

And then the rest in some order

Rain Dogs
Blood Money
Bone Machine
Mule Variations

Then some combo of Blue Valentines, Heart Attack and Vine, Frank's Wild Years, and Real Gone. I'd probably but Real Gone at the top of that list.

After that it's mostly individual songs I love on albums I rarely listen to from start to finish. But Tom Waits has always been more of a singles guy than an album guy for me

My top 3 Mule Variation songs (Hold On, Get Behind the Mule, Come on Up to the House) is maybe my strongest top 3 from any of his albums.

Actually Orphans Disc 1 and 2 would be pretty high up there as well. If I could take the best tracks from those first two discs it would be my favorite TW album

If we're counting Orphans as 3 individual albums, Brawlers would be #4 above Real Gone on my list.

But as a set (which is how I view it, typically), Orphans is further down. Maybe still top 10, maybe just below.

Mule Variations and Alice are my two favorites, with Small Change a very close third. However, Mule probably gets the most play of all of them, just because it has something to scratch every Waits itch. It has a brief stretch in the middle that kind of drags for me ("Black Market Baby," "Eyeball Kid"), but in general it plays through amazingly well for its length.

One Waits song I recently discovered I really like is "Union Square," a blues stomper that I never really gave its fair due before.

How is Bone Machine still not available on vinyl?

Might want to decompress with another act after Dylan but I cannot recommend the ride enough.

For what it's worth, I believe I have listened to Heartattack and Vine more than any other Waits album this year.

Great record. Really underrated.

Bone Machine
Mule Variations
Alice
Blood Money
Real Gone
Bad as Me

That's my ranking since the 90's, because I'm not intimately familiar with The Black Rider album and Bad as Me is one I don't think I've returned to since it was new. Also, Bone Machine and Mule Variations are easily my two favorite all-time Tom Waits albums, not just for this era.

I'd move Real Gone up but otherwise I feel the same. I wish Bad as Me had more staying power, especially considering the long layoffs between new music as he has aged. Kind of doubt we'll hear from him again honestly.
