I'm not saying I can't see why someone would think it was a neat song, and it's definitely the song that made me first pick up a Simple Mind compilation in like 1995. But the neatness of it eroded really quickly when I discovered almost everything from that point on was a rehashed version of it, with lesser and lesser returns each time. Regardless of whether or not it's fair, it's pretty human to start holding the "original" so to speak in less and less esteem with each mildly polished turd that comes in its wake.
A few years later when someone suggested I pick up Life in a Day and Empires & Dance and I went back and really looked into the first era of their career, it was put into an even different perspective. All of the sudden there were probably 30-40 songs that gave me a bigger jolt of excitement than Don't You Forget About Me ever gave me, even when it was the song that made me go check them out to start with. So ultimately it becomes a case where something you love is forever defined by something that strikes you as being ultimately kinda mediocre on its own (I told Kaius in my first response that I don't hate the song, I'm pretty indifferent to it at this point), but also really detrimental to what you actually love about it in the long-term.

Absolutely! Your critique of my list while casting a vote is not what I would consider "unprompted negative commentary" just to be clear.
I am curious what you considered the highs and lows of my squad.
Because I'm an egotistical maniac.
Phew, just making sure.
Free is fucking awesome, obviously. I love so much that you made that the #1 overall pick in this whole tournament. The Smiths are one of my favorite bands of all-time, and How Soon is Now is (to me at least) an example of an anomaly within a band's catalog that still works perfectly. I know a lot of Smiths fans who are pretty "meh" about it at this point, but every time I'm at a club and it comes on I still find it every bit as thrilling as I did when I was 15. Never Let Me Down Again is one of my ten favorite Depeche Mode songs. Shaking Through is a cool song. Fairytale of New York was an odd pick to me, but one I love singing loudly in my car every December, so good memories there. I dig the Ministry and Sonic Youth picks, though not on the same personal level as the Prince, Smiths, and Depeche Mode picks. You get ultra-mega-C86-era cool points with me for picking that Another Sunny Day song (though I personally like the song Anorak City slightly better, but that's splitting hairs).

Fascinated by this horrible bullshit. It sounds like it was made by a person with no concept of harmony, with no idea how sounds work together.

Why wouldn't Heathen's vote count?

I'll pause the next round of voting for a small bit to leave this up for discussion.
If I were to make an executive decision, I would say Heathen's vote is not legitimate, because it seems she voted for a person & not the songs, and she failed to vote for any other person. Plus, she qualified her vote by saying "if kaius is tied" . A vote should be a vote across the board and free of any qualifications.
What do the rest of ya'll think?
